Lewis Hamilton's father makes £2.9m selling 27 of his classic cars at auction

If rumours are to be believed, Lewis Hamilton is earning £50million-a-year from his Ferrari F1 contract. But it's not just the seven-time Formula One champion who has been cashing in recently in the Hamilton household. His father, Anthony, 66, sold a selection of classic cars from his own private collection at the weekend, making almost £2.9million in a matter of hours. On Sunday, 27 cars from his garage were offered to the highest bidder at the Iconic Auctioneers British Racing Drivers' Club Classic Sale at Silverstone. The cars attracted interest from international collectors, with Hamilton Senior's cars largely made up of British icons. The biggest earner was his low-mileage Jaguar XJ220. It achieved a UK auction record sale price of £506,250. Anthony Hamilton, 66, sold 27 cars from his private collection at the weekend for a total of £2.9m. With just 3,277 miles on the clock, it set a new UK auction record at more than half a million pounds  One of only 69 UK-supplied, right-hand-drive examples, the Jaguar XJ220 has covered just 3,277 miles from new and remained with its previous owner for almost 25 years. Finished in a striking Silverstone Green Metallic over light tan leather and supported by an exceptional service history, including regular maintenance by Jaguar Classic, it received bids from around the world, as well as from enthusiasts in the room, one of whom went on to purchase the car. Five further cars from his garage achieved six-figure results. This included a 2007 Jaguar XKSS recreation, one of the hand-built tool-room copies of the ultra-rare 1957 road-going D-Type built by the British brand some 20 years ago. It sold for £400,000, some £25,000 above its upper estimate. This one-of-100 David Brown Speedback GT was also part of the collection and was the third-highest-value car, selling for £202,500  Hamilton also parted with a pristine 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL (far right) for more than £100k  Hamilton also parted with a pristine 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL (far right) for more than £100,000. An ultra-rare 2016 David Brown Automotive Speedback GT with just 354 miles from new achieved £202,500. A pair of Jaguar C-Type recreations, both 2016 cars produced to emulate the 1951 racers, also made big money, fetching £192,000 and £190,000. A 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2-Litre Roadster, comprehensively restored and converted to right-hand drive after originally being supplied through Jaguar Cars New York, sold for £119,250. A beautifully presented right-hand-drive 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL, finished in white over navy blue leather and showing little use since its restoration, reached £104,625. Hamilton's wide selection of Jags included three stunning E-Types, including this 1967 Series 1 Roadster with the 4.2-litre engine. It sold for £119,250, almost £20k above upper estimate  Also of note was the sale of Hamilton's cherished 1997 David Brown Mini Remastered. The heavily modernised and uprated take on the original Mini is number 29 of the David Brown production run. It sold for £92,250, which is also a new world record for one of these machines. Rob Hubbard, managing director and the man with the gavel in the auction room on Sunday, said his team had worked closely with Mr Hamilton to secure the best prices possible. 'The result for the Anthony Hamilton Collection reflects the quality of the cars and the confidence buyers placed in us,' he said. 'Handling a collection of this size requires clear advice, careful preparation and a thorough understanding of how to reach the right audience for every car.'
