A Latvian man has been extradited to Britain over the hit-and-run death of a 12-year-old boy in Coventry.

Dolars Aleksanders has been charged over the alleged hit-and-run death of Keaton Slater in 2024.

Aleksanders was charged with death by dangerous driving on Wednesday, West Midlands Police confirmed.

The 23-year-old is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court today.

Keaton was killed when he was hit by a black BMW in Coventry on June 14, 2024, while he was walking home from school.

Aleksanders was named as a person of interest shortly after the crash, and efforts to extradite him have been ongoing since.

He was flown into Gatwick Airport on Wednesday and was then taken to a custody block in the West Midlands, police confirmed.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said: "[The CPS] has decided to charge Dolars Aleksanders with one count of causing death by dangerous driving following a police investigation into a fatal road traffic collision that led to the death of Keaton Slater.

“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court to pursue criminal proceedings.

“CPS West Midlands has worked closely with West Midlands Police, Home Office, the Latvian authorities, Europol, the Joint International Crime Centre (JICC), CPS International and our Extradition Unit to bring Mr Aleksanders back to face proceedings in a UK court for an alleged crime that took place here."

Police confirmed that Keaton’s parents were being supported by specially trained officers and were being kept up to date with the developments.

In a statement released by the family at the time of his death, they said: "We all will miss our fun-loving little comedian, he just wanted to make everyone laugh smile.

"He was so beautiful inside and outside, our baby and little brother. Life can be so horrible."

It comes just hours after a 35-year-old man was charged after a nine-year-old girl was found dead at an industrial estate in Arbroath.

Minnie Merriman was found seriously injured in the early hours of Monday morning at the Elliot industrial estate in the Angus town.

She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died.

The girl is said to have been camping in the area with her family, from West Yorkshire.

Officers also transported the suspect separately to the same hospital, who was later discharged, taken into custody and, now, charged.

Officers launched an investigation into the tragedy on Monday, with the suspect, Christopher Rice, appearing before Dundee Sheriff Court yestarday.

Police Scotland confirmed they were not searching for anyone else in relation to the child's death.
