Ten goals and 73 shots: Bayern knock out Real Madrid in one of the great European ties Last updated 15 April 2026 11:22pm BST Save Share article Log in or Subscribe Copy link X Icon twitter Facebook Icon facebook WhatsApp Icon whatsapp email Add us as preferred source Add us as preferred source Copy link X Icon twitter Facebook Icon facebook WhatsApp Icon whatsapp email Chris Bascombe Sports Reporter. For neutrals, it felt cruel to be denied another 30 minutes of Bayern Munich versus Real Madrid. Not that anyone felt short-changed inside the Allianz Arena. This was one of the greatest Champions League double-headers in the competition’s history; 180 minutes of breathless entertainment ultimately decided by Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga’s recklessness and the relentlessness of Bayern’s attackers. Meetings between footballing superpowers often fail to live up to the hype. Not here. The first half delivered five goals and enough chances to double that tally. Across the two legs, there were 73 attempts. With the exception of the goalkeepers, the superstars turned up. Thrillingly for England, Harry Kane was a central figure. His latest clinical strike was his 50th of the season, a milestone not achieved by an English footballer at the highest level since 1931. Descendants of Aston Villa legend Thomas Waring will appreciate such illustrious company, while those of Dixie Dean will be relieved Kane is terrorising European defences rather than threatening the Everton legend’s 63-goal domestic record. Harry Kane scores his 50th club goal of the season to give Bayern the advantage again 🔥 📺 Stream with TNT Sports on HBO Max pic.twitter.com/gSnHthSQIb — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) April 15, 2026 “It is a reward for a lot of the hard work we put in,” said Kane, who was typically modest about an extraordinary landmark. “For me it is about keeping it going. I just want to stay physically sharp. When I get chances I feel I can get my shots off quickly.” The first half, especially, was akin to a sporting classic: Roger Federer trading forehands with Rafael Nadal, Marvin Hagler trading punches with Thomas Hearns, or Alain Prost attempting to overtake Ayrton Senna at every corner. Only the goalkeepers failed to receive the memo on quality, although the flaws of Manuel Neuer and Andriy Lunin helped light the fuse. Their athletic prowess was more reminiscent of Luke Littler versus Luke Humphries, although they sadly lacked the same dexterity. Perhaps we should be grateful to Neuer. Following his brilliance in the first leg, he guaranteed an explosive opening this time by gifting Arda Guler the opening goal after just 37 seconds, passing directly to the young Turk to cancel out the German champions’ advantage from the Bernabéu.  Arda Güler scores from range just 45 seconds into the game after Neuer's mistake 🚀 📺 Stream with TNT Sports on HBO Max pic.twitter.com/jx8lcHCtT0 — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) April 15, 2026 “Hold my Pilsner,” Lunin appeared to respond, flapping his arms like an inebriated punter seeking a waitress’s attention during Oktoberfest to allow Aleksander Pavlovic to restore Bayern’s lead. The absence of Thibaut Courtois suddenly seemed decisive. It was a first half of goalkeeping errors at both ends Credit: Marvin Ibo Guengoer/Getty Images Every attack threatened a goal, a testament to the attackers’ class but partially aided by keepers seemingly competing for a “golden slip” rather than the Golden Glove. Guler’s second, from a direct free-kick, initially looked unstoppable, but replays suggested Neuer’s effort to save was somewhere between half-hearted and mildly uninterested. It was a curious half for one of the all-time greats. Kane’s poise in the penalty area is his superpower; when he receives the ball near goal, a celebration feels inevitable. Yet his half-century strike was not enough to calm Bayern’s nerves, as Kylian Mbappé delivered a clinical finish just before half-time to restore Real Madrid’s lead on the night. For Vincent Kompany, it was a familiar conundrum. Regardless of how well his team functioned collectively, the fear of Real’s individual brilliance punishing any errors lingered.  Real were also strengthened by Jude Bellingham’s midfield presence. His powerful running enabled the visitors to turn defence into attack more rapidly with Mbappé and Vinicius Jnr, and he ensured the visitors were a greater physical match for the German champions than they were a week ago. Bellingham was a useful addition to Real Madrid’s midfield Credit: Getty Images/Ricardo Nogueira The frequency of goals inevitably receded in the second half, though there were enough chances to keep the scoreboard ticking. Neuer finally got his act together, while Bayern were disappointed not to test the erratic Lunin more often. Both sides played with the fear that one more error could be fateful. Real’s substitute Camavinga was inexcusably obliging, receiving a second yellow card for delaying a Bayern free-kick after only 24 minutes on the pitch. Two minutes later, the killer blow came from the player whose sale last summer Arne Slot must regret in every waking hour. Diaz fired past Lunin, before Olise ensured there could be no comeback with the last kick of the game. We feel really upset, angry and disappointed. It is unfair,” Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa complained about the undoubted turning point, probably aware his days in the hot seat are numbered. Only in the Real Madrid world will those comments sound valid. The Madrid players’ abuse of the match official after full-time, which resulted in Guler’s sending-off, unnecessarily stained the evening. After Paris St-Germain’s masterclass a day earlier, the quality further mocked any notion that the Premier League is currently Europe’s best. The match-up was truly worthy of the final. Neutrals can now count the days until the victors meet the European champions in another unmissable tie. Latest updates Chris Bascombe Sports Reporter. However, the defender recovers admirably and uses his pace to catch up with the Real forward, who can’t dig out a shot or a cross. 9:43PM 80 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Mbappe was temporarily down and receiving treatment. After leaving the pitch for 30 seconds, he re-enters the action. He seemed to be holding his groin earlier but looks okay to continue. He’s been unplayable for Real this evening. 9:39PM 78 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Olise has come alive in these last five minutes. Once again, he cuts inside, drifting away from Guler and Mendy. The winger tries to bend an audacious effort into the far top corner, but it narrowly sails over the bar. You know what Olise is going to do when he gets the ball, but you can’t stop him. Camavinga is then awarded a yellow card for halting a Bayern attack. 9:37PM 75 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Upamecano heads a golden chance wide. Olise curls such an inviting free kick into the box. Upamecano escapes his marker and heads wide from point-blank range. Somehow, we remain without a goal in this second half.  9:34PM 72 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard What a chance for Real. Mbappe uses his blistering acceleration to breeze past Tah. He gets to the byline and pulls the ball back for Vinicius Junior with a low cross. However, the Brazilian doesn’t connect with his first-time strike and Bayern scramble it clear.  9:33PM 70 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard No goals yet in this second half. If the scoreline stays as it is, we will go into extra-time.  The second half hasn’t quite yielded the same level of drama and action as the first Credit: RONALD WITTEK/Shutterstock Editorial 9:30PM 68 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard It’s Lunin’s turn to make an eye-catching save as Olise cuts inside and shoots. It could have been going off target but Lunin uses his towering frame to tip the ball over the bar. 9:28PM 66 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Kimmich attempts to find Davies with a fizzing through ball, but the midfielder just slightly overhits it, allowing Lunin to gather. Valverde netted a goal against Girona at the weekend, and from similar range outside of the box, he powers a venomous effort at Neuer. However, the goalkeeper is up to the task and makes a solid stop. 9:24PM 63 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Sensational defending from Alexander-Arnold. Kane plays in Luis Diaz, who thinks he is through on goal. Alexander-Arnold tracks back and makes a last-ditch challenge to stop his former Liverpool teammate from shooting.  9:23PM 61 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Changes for both sides. Gnabry has struggled to influence the game this evening and he comes off, with Musiala on his replacement. Arbeloa adds more security to his midfield as Camavinga replaces Brahim Diaz.  9:21PM 60 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Real look incredibly dangerous when they get forward. Mbappe’s pace and directness is frightening. Bayern are finding him almost impossible to contain. 9:18PM 57 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard That is fantastic defending from Tah. The centre-back is confronted with the terrifying task of defending one-on-one against Mbappe. The striker works some space and shoots, but Tah makes a magnificent block. 9:17PM 55 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard What a save from Neuer. Real are so close to a fourth goal on the night. That is vintage Alexander-Arnold. The right back is in possession, picks his head up, spots Mbappe’s run and delivers a menacing cross into the box. Mbappe sneaks in between Upamecano and Laimer to meet the cross at the back post. The forward directs an effort at goal, but Neuer stands firm to make a crucial save from point-blank range. 9:15PM 52 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Bellingham dispossesses Pavlovic on the halfway line, with Real set to launch a counter through Mbappe. Luckily for Pavlovic, the referee awards a free kick. It was a never a foul. Bellingham won the ball fairly and can’t believe it. Bayern have got away with one there. 9:12PM 50 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Mendy pushes Olise in the back, giving Bayern a free kick and allowing everyone to take a breath. 9:09PM 47 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard Bayern nearly score at the start of the second half. Davies gets forward and his cross breaks to Kane. The ball is eventually worked to Luis Diaz, who fires a low effort which deflects just wide. That could have gone anywhere. 9:07PM 46 min: Bayern Munich 2 Real Madrid 3 (4-4) Link copied to clipboard We are back under way for the second. Bayern have made a half-time change, with Davies replacing Stanisic. Real are unchanged at the break. You can’t take your eyes off this game. 8:42PM GOAL! Kane puts Bayern back in front on aggregate Link copied to clipboard Once again, Bayern respond to a Real goal, and of course, it’s Kane. Upamecano advances with the ball and whips an intelligent pass into Kane. The Bayern talisman finds some space between Alexander-Arnold and Eder Militao, before clinically powering an effort into the bottom corner. Lunin has no chance and that is Kane at his very best. Bayern haven’t been that bad, but Neuer’s early mistake and Guler’s unexpected free kick has thrown this game into uncertainty. 8:32PM GOAL! Guler nets a stunning free kick Link copied to clipboard What an incredible goal from the Real youngster. The visitors win a free kick in such a dangerous position and Alexander-Arnold is stood over it. Everyone thinks the former Liverpool man is going to take it, but Guler steps up and whips an effort into the top corner. Neuer gets a hand to it, but he can’t keep the effort out. It was strange goalkeeping from Neuer, who didn’t even dive, but take nothing away from Guler. The playmaker is having a dreamy first half. The goalkeeper looks so uncomfortable from crosses. However, Lunin redeems himself as he makes an eye-catching save to parry away Kimmich’s arrowed strike from outside the area. 8:28PM 25 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard Taking all early action and drama into consideration, Kane has played a very low-key role in these opening stages. Olise bursts into life and cuts inside to shoot with his left foot, but his effort is blocked.  8:25PM 23 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard Mendy gallops into Bayern’s penalty area and is confronted by Tah. Both players are holding each other and eventually fall to the ground. There are some half-hearted appeals for a penalty from some Real players, but the referee isn’t interested. 8:22PM 20 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard What a chance for Mbappe. Vinicius Junior drifts out to the left wing and threads a delightful ball through to the onrushing Mbappe, who is racing in on goal. The Frenchman should shoot with his left foot, but he lets the ball run across his body so he can use his right. This allows Laimer to track back and make a goal-saving challenge. 8:21PM 18 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard Since his costly error inside the first minute, Neuer has had the ball at his feet on a couple occasions and opted for the simple pass. The 40-year-old is arguably the greatest goalkeeper of the modern era, but he’s still capable of making glaring mistakes.  8:18PM 15 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard Now the game has settled down, it looks like Bayern have wrestled back the control after a frantic start. Eder Militao makes a risky sliding challenge inside the penalty area as he tackles Diaz, who has looked extremely lively in these first 15 minutes. 8:16PM 13 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard Real have already paid a massive price for the absence of Courtois. Lunin looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet in the first leg, and appears equally shaky when trying to deal with set pieces. Bayern launch another corner in the box, but on this occasion, a Real player is fouled and Lunin survives. 8:13PM 10 min: Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 1 (3-2) Link copied to clipboard You can’t take your eyes off this game. Anyone who was expecting a cagey match has been emphatically proven wrong courtesy of a mad opening 10 minutes. A perplexed Vincent Kompany was probably wondering if Manuel Neuer spent this afternoon watching Lloris Karius videos. Real Madrid’s ability to benefit from their opponents’ mystifying mistakes in the most consequential games is remarkable. On this occasion, their problem is that their own keeper has matched Neuer’s rare inefficiency. Neither of these keepers appears likely to contend for the golden glove this season. 8:09PM GOAL! Pavlovic strikes back for Bayern Link copied to clipboard Diaz does well to win a corner off Alexander-Arnold. Kimmich swings a ball into the box and Lunin won’t want to see this again... The Real goalkeeper is outmuscled and fails to deal with the corner, allowing Pavlovic to head in from point-blank range. That is nearly as bad as Neuer’s earlier error. Both goalkeepers have now gifted the opposition a goal. Pavlovic’s header has propelled Bayern ahead again on aggregate. What was Neuer doing?! The ball is played back to the goalkeeper, who attempts an ambitious switch of play. He gets the execution completely wrong and it falls to Guler. Link copied to clipboard It was a chaotic game in Madrid, with both teams spurning some glorious chances. Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry missed golden opportunities for Bayern, while Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior forced solid saves from Manuel Neuer. Clinical finishes from Diaz and Kane, either side of half-time, put Bayern into a 2-0 lead. The visitors were purring, and Real were flagging, but the home side wrestled back some control, with Mbappe pulling a goal back in the 74th minute. Real’s performance was characterised by a series of errors on the ball and lapses in concentration, and on another night, Bayern could have scored four or five. However, Real fought back, and with the aggregate score at 2-1, all possibilities seem plausible ahead of the second leg in Munich. When Harry Kane doubled Bayern’s lead within 20 seconds of the second half in last week’s first leg in Spain, Real looked on the verge of collapse. Luiz Diaz had already handed Vincent Kompany’s side the advantage with a composed 41st-minute finish, before Kane swept in Bayern’s second.  The Santiago Bernabeu became a cauldron of despair and anxiety. Still, Real, inspired by Jude Bellingham’s introduction from the bench, rallied as Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior both came close to scoring. Trent Alexander-Arnold eventually set up Mbappe with a brilliant cross, and the French forward tapped in from close range to halve the deficit, leaving the tie delicately balanced.  Unsurprisingly, Bayern are cruising to the Bundesliga title. They smashed St Pauli 5-0 at the weekend, extending their unbeaten league run to ten matches, while also breaking the record for the most Bundesliga goals scored in a single season. Jamal Musiala’s early header was Bayern’s 101st league goal, equalling the record they set in the 1971/72 campaign. The full-time result ensured that the German powerhouse have now scored 105 goals in 29 Bundesliga games this season. Bayern’s overwhelming domestic superiority meant that Kane and Aleksander Pavlovic were unused substitutes against St Pauli. Other key players such as Diaz, Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich, Josip Stanisic, and Jonathan Tah all either started on the bench or were withdrawn in the second half. Serge Gnabry missed the match but is ready to return. The free-scoring Germans are well rested and overflowing with confidence, and look like serious contenders for this season’s Champions League. Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s stuttering domestic campaign was dealt another blow at the weekend as Alvaro Arbeloa’s men drew 1-1 against Girona in LaLiga at the Bernabeu. Federico Valverde powered Real into a 51st-minute lead, before Thomas Lemar netted an equaliser. Barcelona’s commanding 4-1 victory over Espanyol meant that the Catalans extended their LaLiga advantage to nine points. With just eight league fixtures remaining, Real have seemingly allowed the title to escape their grasp. Only a Champions League trophy can rescue what has been a hugely disappointing season for the Spanish giants. However, they’ll need a win in Germany over Bayern to have any chance of progressing into the semi-finals.  Kick-off is at 20:00, with team news to follow shortly.
