King Mohammed VI Congratulates Romuald Wadagni on Election as President of Benin
المصدر: Morocco World News | Source: Morocco World NewsRabat – King Mohammed VI has congratulated Romuald Wadagni following his election as President of Benin.
In the message, the monarch conveyed his best wishes for Wadagni’s success in carrying out his duties.
“Bound by fraternal ties of friendship, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Benin have, over time, developed close cooperation and a strong and mutually beneficial partnership,” the King said.
He also reaffirmed Morocco’s full readiness to work with Benin’s President to “inject renewed momentum” into the partnership between the two countries.
Wadagni secured a victory in Benin’s presidential election with over 94% of the votes.
Benin’s president of the independent electoral commission announced the results on Monday.
Wadagni replaced Benin’s Patrice Talon, who stepped down after completing two full five-year terms.
The elections came after Benin endured a coup attempt, which was repelled by security forces with support from Nigeria.
Benin joins a growing list of African countries that support Morocco’s territorial integrity, backing the Autonomy Plan as the basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
In 2023, Benin said it is considering the opening of a diplomatic representation in Morocco’s southern city of Laayoune.
It also frequently stresses the importance of active solidarity and a mutually beneficial partnership with Morocco.
