King Charles loses 'most loyal of the loyal' staff member after 40 years of service

Bernie Flannery, a devoted staff member of King Charles for over 40 years, is stepping down this weekend.

He has been part of significant royal events, including Princess Diana's life and the King's accession to the throne.

His departure is part of a broader reshuffle within the King's inner circle, alongside Sir Clive Alderton's planned resignation in 2027.

One of the King's longest-serving and most devoted members of staff is stepping down from his position this weekend following more than four decades at the monarch's side.

Bernie Flannery, throughout his time at the Palace, oversaw countless marriages, divorces, Princess Diana, the death of the Queen and then King Charles's accession to the throne.

Royal author Robert Jobson broke the news, revealing: "Bernie Flannery leaves the King's personal staff this weekend.

"The loyal butler is the latest of His Majesty's team to leave his side, after more than forty years at his beck and call."

Mr Jobson paid warm tribute to the departing butler, describing him as "the most loyal of the loyal" and wishing him a happy retirement.

Mr Flannery began his royal career aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia before moving into Charles' personal service in the early 1990s.

Such was the impression he made that when the then Prince of Wales and Princess Diana separated, both wished to retain him on their respective staffs. Mr Flannery ultimately remained with the King at the royal's own insistence.

Throughout his lengthy tenure, the butler maintained a notably low profile. One rare exception came in 1999, when he was caught up in a road accident while collecting a new vehicle on behalf of the Royal Household.

Mr Flannery's departure forms part of a wider reshuffling of the King's inner circle.

It has been compounded by last month's announcement that Sir Clive Alderton - whom Prince Harry described as "The Wasp" in his memoir - would step down from his post around the summer of 2027.

His career at the Palace spanned two decades of service, beginning in 2006 and including a three-year diplomatic posting as ambassador.

LATEST ROYAL NEWS

His contribution was described as "immense and critical" in supporting Their Majesties throughout his tenure.

Reflecting on his years in the role, Sir Cliv said: "It has been the greatest imaginable honour to serve The King and Queen in my present role through such historic times and with unforgettable humour along the way. That support will continue, in a less formal capacity, for all of my life."

His planned departure allows ample time to identify a successor.

As Mr Flannery prepares for retirement, the King himself is on the cusp of his summer holiday.

King Charles

On Friday, he visited the Highland town of Dingwall, which was marking eight centuries since receiving its Royal Burgh status.

The monarch, resplendent in traditional tartan kilt and sporran, appeared in excellent spirits as he greeted local volunteers, community organisations, young people and emergency services personnel.

During the engagement, he bestowed the King's Award for Voluntary Service upon representatives from the Evanton Wood Community Company and Highland and Island Blood Bikes, recognising their outstanding contributions to the community spirit of the region.
