King Charles climbs into cockpit of fighter jet during trip to RAF Marham in Norfolk

His Majesty the King made his inaugural trip to RAF Marham in his capacity as Honorary Air Commodore this afternoon, a title bestowed upon him in September 2023.

The 77-year-old monarch toured the facility responsible for training personnel in the upkeep of the cutting-edge F-35B Lightning jets stationed at the Norfolk base.

In a memorable moment, the King climbed into the cockpit of one of the advanced fighter aircraft, getting a first-hand look at the controls of Britain's frontline combat jet.

The F-35B Lightning is jointly operated by the RAF and Royal Navy as part of the Lightning Force headquartered at Marham, also serving aboard the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.

During his visit, the King also spent time with aviators who had recently returned from operational duties safeguarding British Sovereign Bases in Cyprus against drone threats amid the region's continuing instability.

Earlier this year, personnel and jets from Marham were dispatched as part of a defensive mission to intercept unmanned aircraft targeting the bases on the island.

The deployment demonstrated the vital role that RAF Marham continues to play in protecting British interests overseas, with its crews and aircraft called upon at short notice to respond to emerging security challenges in the eastern Mediterranean.

Beyond his engagement with operational personnel, the King took time to meet the families of those serving at the station, recognising the sacrifices made by the broader military community.

He also spoke with members of a Community Support, Resilience and Climate Change Group based at the airfield, reflecting the diverse range of activities sustained by the Norfolk installation.

The Royal Family released photographs from the occasion, marking a significant day for the base and locals.

The King, who is a former serving Naval officer, is Head of the Armed Forces. When enlisting, the Army and RAF require members to take an oath of allegiance to the monarch.

Members of the family hold various positions with the Armed Forces. Prince William, the future King, is Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, and Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy Submarine Service.

And his 13-year-old-son, Prince George, who is second in line for the throne, has already expressed his enthusiasm for the RAF.

Recently, he visited RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire with Catherine, where - in a similar moment to the King this afternoon - he was spotted effortlessly entering the cockpit of a fighter jet.
