King Charles surprised theatregoers in Stratford-upon-Avon with an unannounced visit to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for a sold-out staging of The Tempest.

The monarch received enthusiastic cheers from the assembled crowds upon his arrival at the Warwickshire venue.

Sir Kenneth Branagh stars in the production as Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan.

Warwickshire's Lord Lieutenant Tim Cox welcomed His Majesty, alongside RSC co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey.

The King has served as patron of the Royal Shakespeare Company since 2024, continuing a tradition established by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who held the role since the company's founding in 1961.

The King took his place towards the rear of the auditorium, seated between Mr Evans and Ms Harvey, with Sir Richard Eyre, who directed the production, positioned nearby.

Spectators in the dress circle gazed down at the monarch, while those seated in the stalls reached for their mobile phones to capture the moment.

The informal seating arrangement placed the monarch in close proximity to ordinary members of the public, adding to the evening's sense of occasion.

At the interval, His Majesty was presented with a refreshment before being introduced to the RSC's in-house costume team.

The King examined several treasured garments from the company's archives, including a crown featured in last year's Edward II production.

Charles handled the fabric of a gown worn by Dame Judi Dench during her 2003 appearance in All's Well That Ends Well.

He also expressed admiration for David Tennant's robe and gown from the actor's 2013 portrayal in Richard II, as well as Sir Antony Sher's costume from a 1984 staging of Richard III.

The King said the collection was "brilliant".

This production represents a significant milestone for Sir Kenneth, marking his first appearance in Stratford-upon-Avon in more than three decades.

The role of Prospero is one the acclaimed actor has never previously undertaken, despite having participated in 35 Shakespeare productions throughout his distinguished career.

The Tempest, considered among the final works penned by Shakespeare, continues its run at the theatre until June 20.

RSC co-artistic directors Mr Evans and Ms Harvey described the occasion as "a tremendous honour", noting that the production also marks Sir Richard Eyre's debut with the company following his lengthy and celebrated career on the British stage.
