The former Prime Minister, replaced in Downing Street this month by Andy Burnham, grew up in a three-bedroom pad in leafy Oxted, Surrey. It went up for grabs last month for £650,000, two and a half times the national average. Now, according to the home's Rightmove listing, it has been sold subject to conditions. Sir Keir has often spoken of coming from working class roots as the son of a nurse and a toolmaker, though Oxted has been rated one of the UK's most desirable towns. It was named one of the top 50 best places to live in a survey by posh estate agents Savills in 2024. The town - 39 minutes from London Bridge on the train - was also described by one lifestyle website as 'catnip to city commuters'. The post added: 'Oxted is arguably the town with it all – great schools, excellent leisure facilities and a burgeoning music festival scene.' Salaries in the town average £49,925 - 30 per cent above the UK's median - and the average house price is £753,000 compared to £271,900 for the whole of the UK. The house was on the market with local agent Robert Leech, with the listing stating that it had been 'extensively modernised to a high standard'. The 1920s property still has the pebble-dash frontage, but now with all mod cons including a large open plan kitchen and living room, with floor-to-ceiling windows leading out to a back garden and chill-out terrace. The 1,172 sq ft place was sold in October 2020 for £455,000 after Sir Keir's father Rodney died in December 2018, three years after wife Josephine passed away. It represents a sizeable profit for those new owners, worth £195,000, if they got the asking price. According to the listing, the front has enough space for two or three cars and is in a 'sought-after location, which offers a perfect blend of comfort and convenience, ideal for modern family living'. Unlike the days of when Sir Keir was a child, the immediate vicinity boasts gentrified touches such as a Waitrose supermarket, a cinema chain Everyman venue, a theatre and independent boutiques.
