Every new season opens with talk of a team winning the transfer window. It is not the same as winning on the pitch and Tottenham found out the hard way after being run out of west London by Brentford, whose dominance made a mockery of suggestions that Spurs are about to take off after casting off the shackles of Levynomics with a summer of relentless spending.
Spurs, whose outlay on new signings will soon surpass £300m, were battered, bruised and embarrassed long before the end. They failed to do the basics against superior opponents and can count themselves fortunate it finished only 3-0 to Brentford, who made light of their inferior resources by opening their second season under Keith Andrews with a dominant win.
