Right, it's a bit hot, isn't it?

Several national newspapers ran with the heatwave on their front pages today. Online news sites have been leading with it all day.

We've smashed the record for heat in June!

Temperatures soared to 36.1C in Gosport, Hampshire, surpassing the previous record of 35.6C which was set in 1976. It marks the highest reading since records began in 1884.

Now, I get it, it's uncomfortable, and I feel very sorry for the people who were involved in the horrible car crash on the M25 today, and the people who had to sit on the tarmac for six hours.

It divides opinion, doesn't it - some people will say this is all about climate change, it's terrible, we're going to boil in our own sweat... other people really, really like the heat.

There were some quite comical things that happened today. Not a great day for the Net Zero brigade.

Britain's solar panels have overheated - it's too sunny for the solar panels! What does this mean? We're going to have to use more gas-powered power stations!

A conference on how to adapt for climate change was cancelled... because of the climate.

Yes the event at London School of Economics was scrapped because the building does not have cooling mechanisms. Apparently they host events like this there every year - but clearly they didn't think to adapt themselves by introducing air conditioning.

But - never fear - London Climate Week was able to continue today...

But lucky for the King he had his very own Master of the Household follow him around the room with a personal fan! Tough life for some.

The Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance said: 'We cannot risk the wellbeing of speakers or guests by subjecting everyone to very unpleasant indoor conditions in addition to hot journeys to the venue.'

The event was due to be attended by guests and speakers from all over the world, who were presumably going to fly in. Which is par for the course for these eco-zealots.

These climate conferences don't have much luck, do they...do you remember COP30 in Brazil? That's the one where Ed Miliband flew an advisor out there and back to go and scope out a luxury hotel which apparently wasn't good enough for him?

Sadiq Khan has called for a maximum temperature for schools, and schools shut across the country today.

It turns out the Department for Education prioritises natural and passive cooling methods over mechanical air conditioning to stay aligned with Net Zero carbon reduction pathways.

So, in a way, it's Sadiq Khan's beloved Net Zero that's causing kids to miss school.

New properties are effectively banned from installing air conditioning because of planning regulations and Net Zero objectives.

My favourite heatwave story is this though... fed up British locals stormed a beach in Britain that is owned by the French! Yes - they reclaimed the beach for Britain!

It's West Beach in Newhaven, East Sussex - it's actually owned by a French government department. Well done to the people of Newhaven - it brings a tear to the eye.

They cancelled Wimbledon qualifying because the automated line-calling system overheated. Which is quite funny, because they replaced human line judges with it last year.

So they did away with human line judges, who could have just drunk water and stayed cool, and replaced it with a system that cannot function in the heat.

Look, I'm not trying to diminish how uncomfortable it will have been today for some people - some of you will have really struggled with the heat.

I'm just trying to show how unprepared Britain is for all kinds of weather - whether it's cancelling trains because there are too many leafs on the track in autumn, or everything grinding to a halt when there's half an inch of snow, to Ed Miliband's solar panels melting in the heat.

Nothing ever really works, does it?
