'It's a disgrace!' GB News host shuts down Labour MP over 'chaos' Keir Starmer resignation

GB News host Emily Carver has shut down a Labour MP after suggesting it is looking "very clear" that an "Andy Burnham coronation" is underway.

Speaking to GB News, Jonathan Brash told GB News that the newly elected Makerfield MP is "talking about reforming things that hammers northern working class communities".

Interjecting Mr Brash, host Emily Carver asked: "Do you seriously think he won that by-election on the issue of water and council tax?"

He responded: "I believe he won that on providing people hope that we finally have somebody who's actually listening to the needs of working class constituents in red wall communities."

Quizzed on whether he would be "comfortable" with Mr Burnham becoming Prime Minister "off the back of a manufactured by-election", Mr Brash suggested it is already "clear" that he will succeed.

He told GB News: "I think it's very clear that we're moving towards that result, and to be perfectly frank, I think that the agenda that Andy Burnham has laid out, breaking that Westminster establishment mindset that has let this country down for far too long is exactly what we need."

Challenging Mr Brash, Emily hit back: "So you're happy with this state of affairs? You're happy with the fact that we now will have the seventh Prime Minister in 10 years?

"You stood on a platform as the Labour Party calling for an end to chaos, and what do we have? We have more and more chaos, navel gazing career politicians trying to get back into power without putting it to the general public. It's a disgrace, Jonathan!"

The Labour MP disagreed, telling Emily: "What I would say is that this is an example of actually us listening to the public, because it's been very clear and I was one of the first MPs to say it, the Prime Minister is historically unpopular with the electorate and we can't go on like this.

"And I said before the local elections that I thought it was time for the Prime Minister to set out a timetable."

Mr Brash suggested that there could now be a "coronation moment" for Mr Burnham, having been backed by ex-Health Secretary Wes Streeting.

He said: "Obviously with Wes Streeting backing him today, it looks that way. But at the end of the day, it is entirely within the gift of any MP if they wish to challenge for the leadership of the Labour Party to do so.

"There's no there's no rule from anyone that says that they can't, but clearly, with the way the things are moving, it looks like we're heading that way."

He stressed: "And look, I really want to get focused back on the things that matter to my constituents, bringing their bills down and really industrialising northern working class communities that have been left behind for too long, that's what we've got to be focused on.

"Modern politics is far too much about personalities, I'm focused on policy. That's what we've got to deliver for Hartlepool, for Makerfield and everyone else in between."

Grilled by host Tom Harwood on how he can support Mr Burnham's bid "without hearing his policies and vision for the country", Mr Brash assured that he has "spoken to him personally" about his "key policies".

He said: "I've spoken to him personally and I've listened to what he said in terms of the key policies. I'm very clear, my singular agenda almost at the moment as a constituency MP is around the issue of council tax.

"Because I see what it does to my constituents every year, hammers them, takes money out of their pockets in a scandalously unfair way, and he has already made clear his views on that as well.

"But the reality is there will have to be a perspective for Government. He will set that out in due course.

"As you keep saying, he's not actually technically fully an MP yet. Once he's sworn in, we'll take it from there."
