‘It was a miscalculation!’ Vote Leave chief addresses Brexit migration crisis as anniversary looms
المصدر: GB News | Source: GB NewsThe Vote Leave Chief Executive has spoken about the “miscalculation” on migration following Brexit that led to the small boat crisis.
Speaking to GB News, Lord Elliot was grilled by Camilla Tominey as the 10-year anniversary of voting to leave the European Union draws close.
She asked: “Does Brexit need to take some responsibility for boat crossings across the Channel?”
“What we did was take back control. It was then up to politicians to decide what the migration policy was,” Lord Elliot began.
“I think it was the miscalculation during Covid. I think there was an idea that people had got used to working from home, wouldn't be going back to work, and that we needed more people coming to the country. So the number of visas went up.”
The Tory peer said that Brexit had allowed the Governement of the time to be held accountable for the error.
“When they went to historic defeat and in a sense, Brexit was all about taking back control and making politicians accountable.
“They were accountable for that.”
