Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has disclosed that he met with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei recently. According to the presidential press service, Pezeshkian described the encounter as taking place in a relaxed atmosphere, with discussions lasting nearly two and a half hours. Notably, this marks the first official account of a personal meeting between Khamenei and Pezeshkian. Historically, Khamenei has remained largely absent from public view since the outbreak of hostilities. On March 12, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, reported that the Supreme Leader had been wounded in US and Israeli strikes. Since then, Khamenei has not appeared publicly; all his statements have been issued in written form or read aloud. The conflict escalated on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran, citing threats related to Iran’s missile and nuclear programs. The strikes resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other senior officials. In response, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week mutual ceasefire on April 7. Despite this, negotiations between Tehran and Washington in Islamabad on April 11 failed to produce a long-term resolution, primarily due to unsettled disagreements. Subsequently, on April 21, Trump expressed his intention to extend the ceasefire with Iran. Iranian state television reported that Tehran does not recognize Washington’s unilateral extension and intends to act in accordance with its own national interests.
