Investigation launched after man taken to hospital following Newport assault

A man has been taken to hospital after an assault in Newport . Emergency services were called to an incident near Maesglas Crescent at around 10pm on Wednesday evening. Officers from Gwent Police attended, along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service, and a 32-year-old man was taken to hospital to treat injuries to his arm and leg. A 31-year-old man the Cwmcarn area was arrested on suspicion of a section 18 assault and he remains in custody as enquiries continue, police said. There is expected to be an increased police presence in the area while investigations into the assault continue, but the public are being reassured that officers believe it to be an isolated incident. Chief Superintendent John Davies from Gwent Police said: "Our officers will be conducting enquiries in the area following the report of this assault so it is possible that you could see an additional police presence in this part of Newport. "While this is an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the public, we understand that this matter might prompt concern from members of our communities. So we would ask anyone with concerns, or importantly information about this assault, to speak to our officers or you can also alternatively contact us in the usual way."
