Investigation launched after car drives through stone wall and plunges 300ft onto rocks at popular beauty spot

Emergency services were called to Great Orme at Llandudno on Saturday morning after walkers on the beach heard the car fall from the headland's limestone cliffs. It is unknown how many people were inside the vehicle and what their condition is, but witnesses described the car as 'crumpled beyond all recognition'.  The car is thought to have been driving on Marine Drive, a single track toll road popular with tourists for uninterrupted views of Snowdonia and the Welsh coastline, when it ploughed through a stone wall.  One local dog walker who asked not to be named said: 'There was initially a lot of commotion and confusion, but the car was so badly damaged that it's doubtful that anyone could have survived that.  'The police arrived quickly and closed the road and an air ambulance landed close to where the car ended up. 'Llandudno is heaving with tourists making the most of the nice weather and a lot of them will go along Marine Drive at some point.' Another local commentator added: 'This is an awful thing to happen, but I can't say I'm all that surprised an accident has occurred up there as some people do drive very fast along that road.' A spokesman for North Wales police asked people to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.  They added that the road would remain closed while the cause of the crash is investigated.
