Bruno Fernandes is one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever creators. The Manchester United captain made footballing history on Sunday, recording his 20th assist of the 2025-26 season after teeing up Bryan Mbeumo for the eventual winner in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest. That assist brought him level with a historic high-water mark first recorded by Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in 2002-03, later equalled by Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne in 2019-20. United’s final match of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend gives Fernandes a chance to go one better. How did Fernandes manage to match one of the longest-standing records of Premier League competition? Multiple world-class footballers, including Cesc Fabregas, Mesut Ozil and Mohamed Salah, have at various points looked like they were going to reach 20 assists in a single season, only to fall short at the final hurdle. Henry himself earned the initial accolade in peculiar circumstances, earning seven assists in the last four matches of 2002-03 as Robert Pires, Freddie Ljungberg and Jermaine Pennant all went on to score hat-tricks as Arsenal finished second behind Manchester United. Fernandes’ route to the accolade this season looked nailed on at points, only to be thrown in jeopardy following injuries to some of his favoured attackers, knotting up his creative flow. It has been a remarkable campaign for the 31-year-old, who was named FWA Player of the Season earlier this month. Be it playing in a box-to-box role within Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 before being restored to a traditional No 10 role under Michael Carrick, he has found a way to make those around him better. The Fernandes of 2025-26 is a cooler operator when working inside the final third, and has greater skill when passing and receiving the ball under pressure. He is more resourceful at set pieces and remains a formidable creator when his side begins to transition from defence into attack. United are at their most captivating when attacking at pace, with Fernandes key to that threat on the counter-attack. Watch the way he moves during a fast break to watch a creator par excellence, a footballing brain processing every possible opportunity at warp speed before delivering a final ball at the highest level. Previous iterations of Fernandes got the ball in high volume and favoured high-risk/high-reward computations. This iteration is sharper when looking to progress the ball, but also when to simply retain possession. This is his best Premier League season, not just creatively (with 3.99 chances created per 90) but when it comes to passing accuracy in the opposition half (83 per cent) and in the final third (76 per cent) too. Fernandes has also morphed into a capable initiator of attacks rather than the one delivering the final pass. His 10.1 passes into the attacking third per 90 is the most of his Premier League career, while his 17.9 passes per 90 within that region is the least. That places him in very unique territory as the scatterplot below shows. Fernandes is the best creator in Europe’s top five leagues, but only a handful of players can match his progressive play, while none of them can match his creative volume. Put simply: in terms of “making things happen” with a football in 2025-26, there is Bruno Fernandes, and then there is everyone else. In many ways, that has made him a more equitable distributor and ensured all of United’s attacking threats are involved in ways best suited to them. Fernandes has often been an inventive improviser, but United’s transfer activity in summer 2025 means he has a wider range of attackers to feed. In 2025-26, the United captain has created more than 10 chances for five different players, a first for him in the Premier League. It is a far cry from 2022-23, one of his best creative seasons, where 56 of the 118 chances he created went to either Marcus Rashford or Antony. This season, be it Benjamin Sesko’s aerial prowess and blindside runs, Matheus Cunha’s sprints in behind or Casemiro’s timing while attacking set-pieces, Fernandes has found ways to target them all, as seen below. His ability to play the best ball to the correct player at the most impactful time has been crucial to United’s season. Twelve of his assists have come in moments where the scores are tied, five have come with United trailing and in need of inspiration. Only three assists have arrived with United in the lead and the playmaker looking to further stamp his authority on proceedings. Claims of stat padding miss the mark. Fernandes is the rising tide upon which all of United’s attacking vessels float. There is one more game for Fernandes to break a Premier League mark that has stood for more than 20 years, but while the assist record recognises individual brilliance, it also acknowledges the power of creative collaboration. Many a would-be record breaker has had their assists dry up after their centre-forward suffers a dip in form, and his ability to rely on multiple attacking players has proven crucial to Fernandes equaling the record. But as with Ozil’s 2015-16, De Bruyne in 2019-20, Salah in 2024-25 and their other illustrious predecessors, the United captain has seen his team-mates spurn a few good opportunities too. Sesko perhaps has the two most glaring misses. Sent in behind by Fernandes against Aston Villa in March, he skewed his shot horribly wide. The Slovenia international had finishing issues against Tottenham Hotspur as well, tamely heading a Fernandes cross into the arms of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in stoppage time, much to his captain’s frustration. Others have also been guilty of flubbing their lines in the final third after a Fernandes set up. Cunha has scored just twice despite receiving 27 chances from Fernandes. Mbeumo has similarly scored just twice, including the record-equaling assist against Forest, from 20 chances. In the 2-0 win over Manchester City that kickstarted the Carrick reign, Harry Maguire hit the crossbar from inches out after rushing to the back post to meet a Fernandes corner. United’s set-piece schemes have undoubtedly boosted Fernandes’ numbers, with eight of his 19 assists coming that way. He had managed just six from similar situations in the previous six seasons, three of which came in the four months after his January 2020 arrival. In open-play, Fernandes’ dashes to create overloads out wide have been a key theme in United’s attacking play under Carrick, with the Portugal midfielder perfectly timing his movement to exploit the opposition’s defence. He remains a threat from more central zones, too. His 18 through-ball attempts from the vertical middle strip of the pitch — like the one above for Sesko against Villa — are the most of his Premier League career. As this season nears its conclusion, United team-mates have made it clear they want to help him achieve this rare accolade. For a brief moment, Fernandes believed he had matched the 20-assist record with his cross for Sesko against Liverpool. The playmaker was seen punching the air following Sesko’s finish before being joined by Casemiro in celebration. Shortly before play restarted, Cunha was seen flashing a 20 gesture with his hands towards his team-mate. “I think now after the Champions League game we’ll work a little bit more harder for him,” said the Brazil international in the mixed zone following the 3-2 win. “He can break this record. I feel like he deserves so much. He helps everyone. I think he’s a beautiful captain for the club. He passed through hard moments, and he deserves to have these beautiful moments also. What a player, what a guy. He deserves the player of the year. And yeah, I hope we can help him get this award also.” !function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("[id='datawrapper-chart-aZdQV']");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r=0;r Fernandes had to wait a while longer before reaching his 20th assist proper. Before Mbeumo’s goal against Forest, the Cameroon international made a hash of a through ball provided by his captain, before the goal itself kick-started a comical final 10 minutes where multiple United players tried their best to help their captain to assist No 21. A Fernandes pass to Patrick Dorgu led to a shot that needed Matz Sels to be at his strongest, before Diogo Dalot struck the post after picking the ball up following a run from Fernandes into the box. Joshua Zirkzee twice slipped at a crucial moment after collecting a Fernandes’ pass, adding a chaotic element to a game full of counter-attacks. "Everyone knew that it was important that I could get another assist at least," Fernandes told Sky Sports after the victory. "They have been trying all they can to score from my passes. I am very happy for the assist, but more than that, I am very happy for the win and to finish the season [at home] on a high." "It’s a privilege and a pleasure for me (to win individual awards), I won’t hide from that. I want collective awards more than anything, but knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, to be player of the season, I’m very grateful for it." Spot the pattern.
