2026LondraMandelson hakkında hazırlanan olumsuz güvenlik soruşturmasının Dışişleri Bakanlığı tarafından görmezden gelindiğinin, Starmer'a ise bakanlık tarafından olumsuz raporun aksine "Gelişmiş Güvenlik Soruşturması Raporu" sunulduğunun ortaya çıkmasının ardından hem Başbakanlık hem de muhalefetten peş peşe açıklamalar geldi. Başbakanlık Sözcülüğünden yapılan açıklamada, ortaya çıkan bilgilerin doğru olduğu ancak Başbakan ve hükümet üyelerinin bu durumdan bu hafta başına kadar haberdar olmadığı belirtildi. Açıklamada, sürecin Dışişleri Bakanlığı tarafından yürütüldüğü ve Mandelson hakkındaki olumsuz güvenlik soruşturması raporuna karşı buna sebep olan iddiaları içermeyen Gelişmiş Güvenlik Soruşturması Raporu'nun da yine bakanlık yetkilileri tarafından verildiği kaydedildi. Starmer'ın bu bilgiyi öğrendikten sonra gelişmiş raporun verilme nedenini öğrenmek için yetkilileri görevlendirdiği, sonuçlarla ilgili parlamentoyu bilgilendireceği ifade edildi. Açıklamada Starmer'ın gelecek günlerde tüm detayları parlamentoyla paylaşacağı kaydedilirken, Sky News, bu açıklamanın pazartesi günü yapılacağını belirtti. İngiliz basınına konuşan ana muhalefetteki Muhafazakar Parti lideri Kemi Badenoch, Starmer'ın olumsuz güvenlik soruşturmasından haberi dahi olmadığını açıklamasına tepki göstererek, "Bilmediğini söylüyorsa bu beceriksiz olduğunu gösterir. Parlamentodaki ikinci büyük muhalefet partisi olan Liberal Demokratlar'ın lideri Ed Davey ise ABD merkezli X şirketinin sosyal medya platformundan açıklama yaparak, "Eğer Başbakan parlamento ve kamuoyunu yanlış yönlendirdiyse gitmesi gerekir. Mandelson'ı İngiltere'nin Washington Büyükelçisi olarak atamasının felaket bir yanlış değerlendirme olduğunu zaten biliyoruz." ifadelerini kullandı. Davey, Starmer'ın güvenlik soruşturmasının arkasına saklandığını ancak bu soruşturma raporunun görmezden gelinerek atama yapıldığını kaydetti. İngiliz The Guardian gazetesi, Mandelson hakkında güvenlik soruşturmasının Starmer tarafından atama kararının kamuoyuna duyurulması sonrasında başladığını ortaya çıkarmıştı. Habere göre, Kabine Ofisi tarafından hazırlanan raporda Mandelson'un, ABD'de reşit olmayan kız çocuklarına yönelik fuhuş ağı kurduğu iddiasıyla yargılandığı sırada hapishanede ölü bulunan milyarder Jeffrey Epstein'le bağlantısı, mali ilişkileri, İngiltere'nin itibarıyla ilgili oluşturabileceği riskler ve geçmiş görevlerinde yaşananlarla ilgili bilgiler yer almıştı. Mandelson hakkında olumsuz güvenlik raporu verilirken Dışişleri Bakanlığı yetkililerinin ise istisnai yetki kullanarak bu raporu görmezden geldiği belirtilmişti. ABD'de 9 Eylül 2025'te ortaya çıkan yazışmalarda, İngiltere'nin Washington Büyükelçiliğine Şubat 2025'te başlayan Mandelson'ın, Epstein'a, "En iyi dostum" diye hitap ettiği ortaya çıkmıştı. Mandelson'ın, Epstein'a gönderdiği doğum günü mesajında, "Gelsin diye saatlerce beklerdiniz. Çoğu zaman etrafınızda olduğuna alıştığınızda birden yine yalnız kalırdınız. Onun yerine eğlendirmeniz gereken bazı ilginç arkadaşlarıyla baş başa kalırdınız." ifadeleri yer almıştı. Yazışmaların yayımlanmasının ardından Mandelson görevden alınırken ABD Adalet Bakanlığı, ocak sonunda Epstein'la ilgili yeni belgeler yayımlamıştı. Bu belgelerde ise Mandelson'un, Epstein'dan 75 bin dolar aldığı ortaya çıkmış, ayrıca reşit olmadığı belirtilen kız çocuklarıyla çekilmiş uygunsuz fotoğrafları paylaşılmıştı. Tony Blair ve Gordon Brown hükümetlerinde (1997-2010) bakanlık yapan Mandelson, bu para transferini hatırlamadığını açıklamıştı. Mandelson'un Ticaret Bakanı olduğu ve 2008 krizinin etkilerinin sürdüğü dönemde, Epstein'e piyasa için hassas hükümet bilgilerini paylaştığı da ortaya çıkmış, Brown, bu hareketi "affedilemez ve vatanseverlikten uzak" olarak nitelemişti.
