Incredibly calm reaction of boy, 9, after armed robber burst into bank while he and his grandma were there to open his first account

By RACHEL BOWMAN, US SENIOR NEWS REPORTER Published: 21:42, 3 August 2026 | Updated: 21:48, 3 August 2026 A nine-year-old boy calmly alerted his grandmother after an armed robber stormed into an Arizona bank as he was trying to open his first account.  Colette Jordan took her grandson Hunter to a Bank of America branch in Mesa to open up his first account on July 13. As they were waiting in the lobby, the boy noticed a woman wearing a ski mask and black hoodie come inside.  'I saw somebody walk in with a ski mask or whatever it's called and a black hoodie. I saw her jump over the teller's desk, and you know, point something at her head,' Hunter told AZFamily. Jordan said that the boy calmly walked over, tapped his grandmother on the shoulder and said, 'Nana, the bank's being robbed,' she recalled. Leetasha Yazzie, 41, was arrested after she allegedly threatened the teller with a knife and stole $3,515, from the bank, according to police. 'Mesa Police Officers responded to a bank near Broadway Rd and Greenfield Rd after a female suspect, armed with a knife, jumped over the counter and threatened a bank employee while demanding money,' the department told Fox 10. 'Several customers and employees were inside the bank at the time and witnessed the incident. The bank employee reported being terrified during the robbery and believed the suspect was capable of stabbing him.' Colette Jordan took her grandson Hunter to an Arizona branch of Bank of American to open his first account when he noticed an arm robber burst in Jordan said that the boy calmly walked over, tapped his grandmother on the shoulder and said, 'Nana, the bank's being robbed,' she recalled Yazzie was arrested after she was found hiding in a car near the bank, and she allegedly confessed to the crime during a police interview.  'A search of her vehicle resulted in the recovery of stolen money and additional evidence believed to be connected to the robbery,' police said.  She was charged with robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and four counts of disorderly conduct. Hunter told the local news station that he was not frightened during the incident and knew it was important to remain calm.   'Because if I get scared then I could get the robber's attention, and just absolutely end our lives,' he said. Jordan added: 'The first thing that crossed my mind was that I had to get him safe. I couldn't let anything happen to him.' While they were stuck in the bank on lockdown, the bank manager was able to open an account for Hunter with the $160 he had saved up.  'Since we were stuck there, the bank manager continued to open his account. So we got all the paperwork done,' Jordan said. Mesa police praised Hunter for his bravery and composure during the situation. 'We understand a nine-year-old was inside the bank during the robbery and recognized that something was wrong,' police said. 'He quickly alerted his grandmother who was able to get to safety. His awareness and willingness to speak up were commendable.' The Daily Mail contacted the Mesa Police Department and Bank of America for comment.
