Ian Wright goes on furious rant against Scottish football chiefs accusing them of 'letting country down'

Ian Wright has accused Scottish football chiefs of "letting the country down" in a furious rant after Scotland lost to Brazil.

Steve Clarke's side has a slim chance of reaching the round of 32, but after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil last night, they need results to go their way.

"Laura [Woods] asked me the other day what Scotland can do next, and I think it goes a lot deeper than that," Wright said on ITV.

"When you look at Norway, a country the same size as Scotland, they're averaging six or seven thousand in attendances on a weekly basis.

"Scotland are averaging 16,000. But Norway have managed to secure a broadcast deal worth £25million more a year than Scotland's.

"Obviously, they've got a better commercial operation than Scotland. But at the same time you look at Scotland and their raw materials.

"You look at amazing attendances, talent, storylines, grassroots participation. Someone in Scotland is letting down this country on a massive scale.

"People are very proud of them all over the world, but they've got to do more. There's got to be a bolder, braver vision for Scottish football."

Clarke offered a pessimistic view of Scotland's chances of staying in the World Cup after their devastating loss yesterday.

He said: "You give a team like Brazil the chances that we gave them in the game, you expect to get punished. And that's what happened. I think we're probably going home.

"We know they're deadly in the attacking third of the pitch and we gave them for sure the first two goals, probably the third goal as well.

"So we gave them the goals, but on the counter of that, they also missed a few chances, and Angus [Gunn] had to make a few good saves. We created one or two chances, but nothing really clean."

Clarke said he was not angry with the players who were trying to reach the knockout stages for the first time in Scotland's history.

He continued: "I'm disappointed for them because they didn't reach the levels that they can reach.

"I think we all know that. Anybody that's watched this team over the last few years knows that we didn't reach the levels that we can reach."

"I think when you see the physicality, the power and the technique of both Morocco and Brazil, you can see that we have to do something about it.

"We have to try and be better at producing young players that can grace the world stage."

The Scottish coach praised the fans for their incredible support during the campaign and the work his squad has done.

He said: "The fans appreciate what this group of players have done for them.

"They've had a great time, they are great ambassadors for the country, but they wouldn't be here without that group of players and I think, for me, that's a very important point."
