The former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool forward won his first Three Lions cap in 1995, when Newcastle United icon Shearer was a key figure for England.‌Collymore had secured his place in the squad after a remarkable debut season in the Premier League, netting 22 goals for newly-promoted Nottingham Forest. England manager Terry Venables rewarded him with a starting berth alongside Shearer in a 2-1 triumph over Japan in the Umbro International Trophy.‌It proved a career highlight for Collymore, who would move to Liverpool for an English record £8.5million fee in July of that year. Yet, he found it difficult to bond with Shearer, despite both forwards enjoying considerable success at club level.‌"I remember being around England camps and my England debut – I made my England debut with Alan Shearer.
