Published: 20:42, 22 April 2026 | Updated: 20:42, 22 April 2026 It is not what you would usually expect to see in a Scottish harbour. But residents in a coastal town came face to face with a walrus, last spotted in Orkney, on Wednesday. Magnus, who earned the nickname after making a stop in Orkney on St Magnus Day last Thursday, moved 100 miles south to Lossiemouth Marina before enjoying a well-earned snooze after hauling himself onto a floating pontoon.  But as hundreds gathered to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the marine mammal in the Moray town, people were urged to stay away. Magnus climbs on to the pontoon before enjoying a quiet nap... and then setting off once again Crowds gathered at a safe distance to watch the unusual visitor to the harbour in Lossiemouth An area was cordoned off to give the large Arctic mammal the chance to enjoy his beauty sleep.  British Divers Marine Life Rescue said: ‘Walruses are occasional visitors to UK shores, with sightings increasing in recent years – thought to be linked to loss of sea ice habitats in the Arctic. ‘These animals rely heavily on undisturbed rest to conserve energy during long journeys.’ Magnus later slipped back into the water and there is now speculation as to where his next stop in his roving adventure will be.
