AOC, 36, and her longtime partner Riley Roberts, 38, are understood to have split in February, according to a former Democratic operative who said the congresswoman was taking a break from romance to focus on her political future. The source said AOC could well run for Chuck Schumer's Senate seat in New York rather than make a presidential bid in 2028. A second source, who worked on Capitol Hill and socialized with the couple, said AOC's star soared so high it may have created a 'very, very toxic' power imbalance in their relationship. 'I'm not surprised they broke up,' the source said. Their relationship appeared to become increasingly strained as AOC's political career exploded while Roberts remained largely behind the scenes, they added. 'Rare is the man who is able to put himself in the back seat to his wife's political career.' 'They reminded me a little bit of my grandparents in their affectionate nature. So when it was working, it was beautiful,' said a former AOC staffer. 'You know when people get together young. Life is life. Life happens. I hope they're happy.' Neither AOC nor Roberts has publicly confirmed the breakup or responded to the Daily Mail's requests for comment. The former Democratic operative said that, despite the split, the pair have remained close friends and still dine together regularly. 'They eat together a lot. They are close friends, but it's no longer a romantic relationship,' they said. The split comes as AOC finds herself at another pivotal moment, with the New York City Democrat increasingly discussed as a possible 2028 presidential contender. In recent months, she has also been seen without her engagement ring, prompting questions about whether the couple were still together. Those rumors intensified after AOC publicly documented her decision to freeze her eggs, saying the process made her feel 'more in control of my life.' The timing prompted speculation about her personal and political future, although AOC has not said the procedure was connected to her relationship. Her mother, Blanca Ocasio-Cortez, has likewise refused to discuss the couple's status. When the Daily Mail approached the 63-year-old outside her single-story home in Eustis, central Florida, she immediately declined to comment. Asked whether her daughter was still with Roberts, she replied: 'I really cannot talk, I can't say anything.' Both were interested in politics and debate, and friends have described Roberts as intellectually combative and fond of challenging conventional wisdom. But the couple broke up after college when Roberts returned to his native Arizona. He worked in marketing, web development and digital strategy before the pair reconnected around 2015 and resumed their relationship. Roberts eventually moved to New York City to be closer to AOC as her political ambitions began accelerating. He supported her during her stunning 2018 congressional campaign, when she defeated powerful Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley and became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. AOC's rise was almost instantaneous. Within months, she had become a national political celebrity, social-media powerhouse and one of the most recognizable faces of the progressive movement. Roberts was described as a supportive partner, even as he remained largely out of the spotlight. That imbalance was something AOC herself had previously discussed. In a 2018 interview, she said some men can struggle when their female partner becomes successful, warning that 'the moment you start being yourself, they kind of freak out.' The couple became engaged in April 2022 during a trip to Puerto Rico, AOC's family's ancestral home. She confirmed the engagement but said they were not rushing into wedding planning. Four years later, they still had not married. Their prolonged engagement was notable because Roberts occupied an unusual position in AOC's political world. He was her partner and fiancé, but not her husband, meaning his personal finances were not subject to the same congressional disclosure requirements that would have applied had they married. That distinction became the subject of several controversies. In 2019, conservative critics accused AOC of putting Roberts on the congressional payroll after a screenshot surfaced showing him with an official @mail.house.gov email address. Her office said he was not employed by Congress and that the account existed so he could access her calendar. The couple faced fresh scrutiny in 2021 when Roberts attended the Met Gala with AOC. She wore her now-famous 'Tax the Rich' dress, while Roberts' attendance later became part of an ethics investigation. In August 2022, Roberts also accompanied AOC on an official trip to Italy and received travel-related benefits as her 'spouse.' Critics accused the couple of having it both ways – treating Roberts as a spouse when benefits were available while avoiding the financial disclosures that would have applied to a legal husband. The House Ethics Committee investigated the Met Gala issue and concluded that the violations were not 'knowing and willful.' AOC was nevertheless required to reimburse thousands of dollars covering the value of the ticket and Roberts' meal. The case was closed after the payment was made. For the Capitol Hill source who knew the couple, the years of scrutiny surrounding Roberts' finances and role in AOC's political orbit may have taken a toll. 'The marvel is that it lasted as long as it did,' they said. 'It's hard to be a political spouse. Period. You are going to sacrifice your career and your aspirations to your partner's aspirations.' The source also pointed to the brutal uncertainty of congressional politics. AOC must fight for reelection every two years, meaning her career – and potentially the lifestyle built around it – is repeatedly put to a public vote. And she has refused to rule out a Presidential run in 2028. The source said they may have mutually agreed to keep the breakup private, just as they had kept much of their relationship away from Washington's unforgiving political spotlight. After more than a decade together, the relationship that began with two young political enthusiasts at Boston University appears to have reached its final chapter.
