Hugh Laurie and Graham Linehan have become embroiled in a bitter online feud after the House star issued an expletive-laden response to the comedy writer during a row over men competing in women's sport.
The clash erupted on X after Mr Laurie, 67, weighed in on a debate surrounding professional basketball, referring to the controversy as a "broigus".
The actor wrote: "Strange this whole broigus should happen in professional basketball, where 99.9 per cent of the world are, effectively, 'women'.
"Per Pablo Torre of Sports Illustrated, if you’re an American man between 20 and 40 years of age and 7 feet tall or more, there’s a 17 per cent chance you’re already in the NBA."
Mr Linehan, 58, who has become one of the most outspoken gender-critical figures in Britain in recent years, took issue with Mr Laurie's remarks and publicly challenged the actor to clarify his position.
"Do you think men should be allowed to compete in women's sports? @hughlaurie. Yes or no? That's what the argument is about," the Father Ted co-creator wrote.
"Calling it a 'broigus' to distance yourself from it is cowardly. Look how easy this is: Women deserve fair sports."
Mr Laurie responded furiously, telling the writer: "Firstly, f*** off; secondly no, I don’t believe men should compete against women.
"I thought I’d made that pretty clear. If you’d looked. But obviously you must get onto your next…"
The unexpectedly heated response from Mr Laurie quickly attracted attention, with several social media users questioning why the actor had reacted so strongly to Mr Linehan's challenge.
One critic replied: "Why be rude? It wasn’t clear AT ALL what you were saying. I think you owe Graham an apology. I expected better from you."
"It wasn't clear. That's why everyone asked," another argued.

A third told the actor: "Your position isn't really that clear based on that tweet. If you've made your position clear in previous tweets or commentary, you shouldn't assume people have read everything you've said."
Another branded the response "disappointing", adding: "Thought you were better than that. Revealing that you got angry when asked for some clarity."
Others pointed to the role gender-critical campaigners including Linehan and Harry Potter author JK Rowling have played in the debate.
"A few years ago just saying this could have gotten you cancelled," one person claimed. "If it were not for brave people like Graham and JKR making a stand people might still be scared to speak up."

However, Mr Linehan also faced a barrage of criticism over his approach to Mr Laurie.
One detractor told him: "Leave women alone. Genuinely, no trans person is more of a threat to women than you with your gender extremism."
Another joked that the two comedy veterans should settle their differences "over some cigars and a bottle of whiskey in the privacy of a gentleman's club" rather than behaving like "street urchin ruffians".
A further critic told Mr Linehan: "Graham, you used to be very clever and humane. How about shutting up now and writing some actual f***ing comedy for a change."
Others rallied behind the Irish writer, however, with one supporter praising him for sacrificing his career to speak out on the issue.
"You tossed your career away to speak the truth & that is something I admire," they wrote, adding: "Thank you for using your name to highlight the injustice".
Mr Linehan, best known for co-creating Father Ted and writing The IT Crowd and Black Books, has devoted much of his public profile in recent years to campaigning on sex and gender issues.
Mr Laurie, meanwhile, achieved international fame as the acerbic Dr Gregory House in the US medical drama House, having previously become a household name in Britain through his comedy partnership with Stephen Fry.
