A huge volcanic eruption has caused flight cancellations at a popular British hotspot in Italy.
Europe's most towering active volcano, Mount Etna, has roared back into action on the Italian island of Sicily, hurling vast quantities of ash, incandescent rock and molten lava high into the sky.
The eruption has thrown travel plans into disarray at nearby Catania Airport, one of eastern Sicily's main gateways, where inbound flights have been suspended as clouds of volcanic ash contaminated the surrounding airspace.
Bright streams of lava have been observed flowing down the mountain's flanks, while a massive column of dark smoke and ash has risen above the Sicilian landscape.
The disruption is affecting significant numbers of British tourists, for whom Sicily remains a hugely popular holiday destination, with many travelling through Catania each year.
Incoming flights were grounded on August 10 as volcanic activity intensified, and those restrictions have not yet been lifted owing to the continued presence of ash in the airspace above the airport.
The disruption has persisted over several days as Etna's behaviour has grown increasingly volatile.
The current phase of unrest has been characterised by the forceful ejection of volcanic bombs around the upper summit area, accompanied by dense plumes of ash.

Catania Airport wrote on its website: "Due to Etna’s eruptive activity and current wind conditions, the closure of Sector C1 has been extended and Sector B3 has also been closed, resulting in the suspension of arrivals and departures until 11am tomorrow, August 12.
"Passengers are kindly advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before heading to the airport.
