Huge home for sale on Billionaire's Island for NOTHING - but there is a very unusual catch

An incredible mansion has hit the market for absolutely nothing - but if you want it, it comes with a strange snag. The home in Massachusetts is valued at around $3million, around £2,200,000, and it has hit the market for free. You can find the property on Nantucket, nicknamed Billionaires' Island, but the problem is it can't be there for much longer. The potential buyer will have to move the house themselves off the plot because it is part of the island's Demolition Delay Bylaw programme, a 2024 strategy that motivates people to relocation their homes rather than have them demolish. That means if you get your hands on the keys, you must agree to love the building to a new location within 180 days. Owner Dean Lampe originally listed the home for millions but was forced to give it away when pressure started to build meaning the three-bedroom, two-bathroom pad - spread over 1,736 square feet - is yours for nothing. The good news is that if the claimant doesn't have land available yet, the homes can be "parked" in what is known as a "crib" - a crane which suspends the building in the air for as long as is needed. House transfers have to be made between the middle of September and June 15, before summer tourists crowd the island. "Why would we put these houses into a landfill when someone can use them?" local real estate agent Shelly Lockwood of Pepper Frazier Real Estate told Realtor.com . "Because the value of the land is so high, and because there's none left on the island, really people will buy a house they don't want just to get the land. When they come up, they are very hot commodities. "Who wouldn't want a house for $150,000 or so moving costs? You grab them if you can - it's a hell of a value. "There didn't used to be as many people here who didn't want a house. Twenty-five years ago, we didn't have this mini-compound mentality. "There's millionaires and billionaires here now. But there's also just a lot less land." The demand to move a property may seem strange to most people, but it has become a tradition on the island as residents come to terms with ever-increasing costs. But moving a huge home is no easy task. Carl Jelleme of Toscana Corp, a company which has been moving homes on the island for decades, told the publication: "When it comes to moving a structure down the road, there are variables at play, such as road width, trees, utility lines, and neighboring structures. "Moving a building in multiple pieces is an option, but in our experience, it is rarely the most practical or cost-effective solution."
