How Reading got posh: Rock festival loved by students launches 'over 21s' campsite with pamper zone and 'premium' loos

But Reading Festival, headlined this year by Charli XCX, also now has offerings for an older, more premium audience, introducing a campsite for over-21s, protecting fans from younger attendees. The Vista campsite, barred from teenagers, features private showers and 'premium' toilets - a world away from Reading's grittier side. Also in the exclusive area is a 'shaded chill out lounge' with a cocktail and juice bar, alongside its own food and drink stalls and a 'GRWM pamper zone'.  The ticket prices have even entered the thousands for a 'boutique' weekend camping experience at the festival, which has historically been known for being young and budget-friendly.  While a single-day ticket for non-campers on Friday and Saturday is already £205, camping for the weekend in the 'Lotus Boutique' luxury campsite will set festivalgoers back £1,408.25.  The Lotus option is billed as the festival's 'ultimate luxury camping experience'.  The ticket price includes four single beds, 'luxury toilets, showers and pamper area', 'boutique dining and cocktails' (although these come at extra cost), and 'luxury lounge areas with all-day shade'.  Reading Festival is famous for being the preserve of GCSE exam students making the most of their post-results day freedom  The Vista campsite is tucked away in the south-east corner of the festival plot, limited to those aged over 21 Amenities also include the more basic: 'Charging and WiFi locations' and a '24hr reception and check-in' service.  'Festival tickets are not included in the accommodation price, each person staying in your accommodation must have a weekend camping ticket booked separately', the £1,408 listing states in bold at the bottom.   There are extras including a bar, charging ports and cocktails - all available at, again, an extra cost. Guests will also have to pay more to eat at the 'luxury Clubhouse restaurant and bar with DJs'. Meanwhile, two single beds in a simple 'Crew hut' will come at £868.25, although the listing states that bedding is not included in the price, so campers will have to supply their own.  A couple staying in a pre-pitched tent at the Lotus camping site with a 'sleep bundle' including a 'sleep mattress and sleeping bag for each person' will fork out £293.25 - on top of a festival ticket each.  This year's festival is set to be headlined by Essex singer Charli XCX after her eighth album Music, Fashion, Film was released last month. She released the soundtrack album for Emerald Fennel's Wuthering Heights earlier this year as well as producing her own film titled The Moment. Almost 100,000 fans descend on the festival each year armed with tents which pack out campsites  Essex star Charli XCX is among the headliners at this year's event, to be held over the August bank holiday weekend London singer-songwriter Raye has also been given top billing at the Berkshire festival English drum and bass duo Chase & Status have also been given top billing alongside London rapper Dave, indie rock band Florence and The Machine, Dublin band Fontaines D.C. and singer-songwriter Raye. Also set to perform during the festival are London grime artist and rapper Skepta, American pop stars Sombr and Role Model and British hip-hop artist Loyle Carner. Belfast trio Kneecap will also take to the Reading stage after the UK government lost its appeal against a judge's decision to throw out a terror charge against one of its members in March. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known as Mo Chara, had been accused of showing support for proscribed organisation Hezbollah after a London show in 2024. In previous years Reading has seen legendary acts including Patti Smith, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and Kendrick Lamar perform. Last year's festival was headlined by US singer Chappell Roan and her countryman, the rapper Travis Scott. Irish singer-songwriter Hozier also performed following the success of his single Too Sweet, while nu metal band Limp Bizkit also made an appearance. After their second Reading appearance in 1992, American rock band Nirvana released an official CD and DVD of their performance in 2009 after years of bootleg copies circulating. Frontman Kurt Cobain was pushed on stage in a wheelchair, mocking rumours of poor health and the band's potential split, wearing a hospital gown and wig. He then pretended to struggle to his feet before singing one line, collapsing, then rising to his feet again and beginning the set. This year's festival begins on Thursday, August 27 and runs until Sunday, August 30. Last month the festival's organisers applied for a licensing change which could allow music on the main stage during a fourth day from next year. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are usually the main event days with the two days before seen as a warm-up period, during which campers can arrive ahead of the prime action. But Festival Republic has applied for amplified music to be added to the festival's licence for Thursdays on the main stage only from 5pm until midnight. The company also applied to extend the hours during which alcohol can be sold.
