Lawmakers also passed a motion that would unlock a vote on sending aid to Ukraine. The Iran war powers resolution, offered by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, had been heading for a vote before the GOP-led House left for its Memorial Day recess on May 21. But it was abruptly pulled from the floor when it appeared that too many Republicans were absent to defeat it.On Wednesday, it passed 215-208, with four Republicans joining all Democrats in voting yes.The resolution directs Trump to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities with Iran, unless Congress votes to declare war or authorizes the use of military force against the Middle East nation. It would not force him to end the conflict, however, and is a symbolic expression of disapproval of Trump’s war with Iran.Earlier this year, Republicans had rejected three other attempts to pass a war powers resolution.
