By SARAH BROOKES - SENIOR REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 07:42, 7 April 2026 | Updated: 07:45, 7 April 2026 A six-week-old kitten is recovering in foster care with a fractured pelvis and another is missing after they were hurled from a moving car in Melbourne's west. The rescued kitten, now named Dorothy, survived the ordeal after a passing motorist found the injured animal on the roadside and rushed her to Lort Smith Animal Hospital's emergency department. Good Samaritan Emma and her partner were driving along St Albans Road when they saw the car ahead of them roll its window down before two cats were thrown onto the road. Chief veterinarian Dr Jessica Wilde said with traffic moving at around 60kh and nothing but hard pavement beneath them, the kittens’ chances of survival were 'devastatingly slim'. 'Emma didn't hesitate. She braked immediately and pulled over, finding one of the kittens, now named Dorothy, terrified, hissing, and in obvious pain,' she said. 'Another driver stopped to help search for the second kitten, but tragically, they couldn't be found.' It is not known what happened to the other kitten. Dorothy is showing remarkable strength, despite the horrific ordeal. Six-week-old kitten Dorothy (pictured) suffered a fractured pelvis after she was thrown from a moving car in Melbourne's west Chief veterinarian Dr Jessica Wilde (pictured left) said there was no excuse for such cruelty Lort Smith nurse Jordan (pictured) is taking care of Dorothy while the kitten continues to receive treatment 'Amazingly, little Dorothy is proving to be quite the fighter, and we are doing everything we can to help her pull through,' Dr Wilde said. 'Dorothy is now receiving the urgent care she needs, and is being lovingly looked after in foster care by one of our nurses, where she can finally rest, recover, and begin to feel safe.' Dr Wilde said it was difficult to understand how someone could be so cruel to a defenceless creature. 'It's hard to make sense of something like this,' she said. 'But what we do know is that there is never an excuse. If you're unable to care for an animal, there are always safer, more compassionate options, including surrendering them to a shelter or veterinary clinic. 'Dorothy is incredibly lucky to be alive.' Lort Smith nurse Jordan is taking care of Dorothy as the kitten continues to receive treatment. 'She is such a beautiful little girl, and despite her terrible start to life, is getting stronger every day,' Jordan said. The rescued kitty is showing remarkable strength, despite her horrific ordeal 'We will make sure to stay by her side and give her all the love and care she needs to get through this traumatic event.' The heartbreaking story sparked horror from Aussies online. 'Hope someone has found other kitten and that it is getting attention it needs too. Humans can be so cruel,' one wrote. Another added: 'How could somebody think of doing that let alone actually doing it. 'Not only is it cruel, but knowing somebody will see you together with cameras everywhere.'
