Horror as teen plunges to his death from a CBD hotel balcony during police pursuit

Published: 07:50, 10 May 2026 | Updated: 07:50, 10 May 2026 A teen's attempt to flee from police has taken a tragic turn after he plunged to his death from a high-rise hotel balcony near Brisbane's CBD. The 18-year-old is believed to have scaled a sixth-floor balcony at the Mercure Hotel in inner-city Spring Hill after police entered a room at around 5.50pm on Saturday. North Brisbane District Acting Chief Superintendent Simon Tayler said that police attended the hotel in search of four people they wanted to speak to in relation to alleged property-related thefts across the city. He added that police 'negotiated' their way into the hotel room. 'This was a person that we were chasing, [but] he wasn't alone inside that room, there were three other people that were taken away... they were wanted as part of a number of property crime-related offences,' Supt Tayler said. 'Upon arrival, [officers] identified the group was on level six. They made entry, identified themselves as police officers and an an 18-year-old inside the room has gone and fled from police and has gone off a balcony located in the room. 'He fell and immediately sustained critical injuries.' The teen could not be revived, despite the best efforts of emergency responders. The man's death automatically triggered the Ethical Standards Command investigation, which is also subject to independent oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).  The state coroner has also been advised. 'The whole idea of having Ethical Standards, CCC and the State Coroner over the top is for them to take an independent lens to look at it and make sure that what we did complied with everything as best we can,' Supt Tayler said.
