Three other people are still in hospital. Officials said 67 people had consumed the liquor, which contained methanol, a highly toxic substance. In the past two days alone, five people have died. The latest victims were Mukesh Damor, 36, and Bhargav Upadhyay, 42. Upadhyay was being treated at a private hospital, while Damor had been admitted to the civil hospital. Police said the victims had consumed spurious liquor packed in bottles carrying the name of a popular Indian-made foreign liquor brand. Gujarat is a dry state, where the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol are banned. Authorities also traced 24 other people who had consumed the liquor and got them medically examined. An official said all of them were found to be in normal health. So far, police have arrested 13 of the 21 people named in the FIR registered at Vartej police station in connection with the incident. The accused have been booked under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prohibition Act, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, adulteration and poisoning. A local court on Thursday remanded the arrested accused to police custody for 10 days. The investigation has been handed over to the State Monitoring Cell, a special Gujarat police unit that tracks illicit liquor and gambling operations across the state. According to officials, the liquor was allegedly prepared at the house of Gautam Solanki, a resident of Vartej, with the help of Raees, who has been detained in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Police said the toxic liquor was packed and sealed in bottles carrying the label of an IMFL brand and then supplied to bootleggers for distribution. The case came to light after three friends consumed the liquor in Vartej on the night of August 16. All three fell ill and one of them later died. Tests on the blood sample of the first victim, Upendrasinh Gohil, showed the presence of methanol. More deaths followed and several others were hospitalised with severe complications. Officials said a Forensic Science Laboratory report found that the liquor contained 38.59 per cent methanol and 0.94 per cent ethanol. According to the FIR registered at Vartej police station on August 19, Solanki told police that he had come in contact with Raees through a common friend.
