Henry Nowak's twisted killer allowed cushy prison-to-prison calls with his mother

Digwa, 23, is being held at HMP Frankland in Durham, after he stabbed 18-year-old Henry Nowak five times last December. His mother Kiran Kaur, 53, is at Bronzefield Prison in Surrey, serving three years after she hid the eight-inch blade Digwa used in his attack. They are set to call within weeks, and the privilege is said to have infuriated prison staff. ‘Poor Henry’s family won’t get to see him again, so why should Digwa be allowed to speak to his mum via video-link?’ a source told The Sun. ‘It is beyond a joke, and we go too far to accommodate the needs of killers. ‘The fact Digwa will be allowed the video calls with his mum has angered people, including many of the staff at Frankland. ‘They think it’s a disgrace that they have to go to the effort of arranging them.’ Digwa, 23, is being held at HMP Frankland in Durham, after he stabbed 18-year-old Henry Nowak six times last December The university student told police officers he couldn't breathe and that he had been stabbed as he lay dying Digwa's mother Kiran Kaur, 53, is serving a three-year jail term after she hid the eight-inch blade he used Digwa attacked Mr Nowak on December 3 last year and lied to officers who attended the scene, claiming he had been the victim of a racist attack. Police bodycam footage later showed officers arresting Henry as he repeatedly said he had been stabbed, telling them, ‘I can’t breathe’. At one point he said, ‘I've been stabbed’, to which an officer replied, ‘Don't think you have, mate.’ Digwa - described as ‘weapon obsessed’ during his murder trial - was jailed for life in June with a minimum term of 21 years. He has had an application approved for online video chats - known as ‘purple visits’ - with his mother. It is understood they have not yet called and will only be allowed to speak English when they do, so they can be monitored. A prison insider said: ‘Digwa will be put in a room with a tablet or laptop linked to his mum on a device in her jail and staff will be outside the door at each prison. But it would also be monitored in the security room - and if they started to speak Punjabi or to discuss the murder the call would be cut off. Reform MP Robert Jenrick said: ‘While Henry Nowak’s family and friends struggle to get over their loss and his terrible death, his despicable killer is enjoying perks in jail. ‘He shouldn’t have any privileges - it’s a disgrace.’ The Prison Service said: ‘This prisoner is being managed within the prison estate in line with the severity of the heinous offences for which he was convicted.’
