Heartwarming moment Air Force father returns from Japan to surprise son on stage at high school graduation

By LAUREN ACTON-TAYLOR, US NEWS REPORTER Published: 01:56, 26 May 2026 | Updated: 02:16, 26 May 2026 A heartwarming moment was caught on video as an Alabama high school student's Air Force father returned from Japan to see his son graduate.  Branden Jackson was seen walking across the stage as he graduated from Huffman High School in Birmingham during one of the biggest moments of his life.  But the special day became that much more unforgettable after the graduate was met with his father - Air Force Master Sergeant Tobias Jackson who had returned from three years of deployment in Japan - at the other end of the stage.  'It's been very hard to keep it under wraps,' Master Sergeant Jackson told WVTM 13.  'He's grown into such a great young man, and he understands the significance of what we do and how we do it. When he thought I was not going to make it, his response was, "I completely understand."'  Jackson, with his diploma in hand, was seen completely stunned by the surprise, as the crowd erupted into cheers while the father and son embraced.  Branden Jackson graduated from Huffman High School but the day became unforgettable after his dad, Air Force Master Sergeant Tobias Jackson, surprised him at the end of the stage Jackson, with his diploma in hand, was seen completely stunned by the surprise, as the crowd erupted into cheers while the father and son embraced Jackson's father had been in Japan for the past three years serving in the US Air Force 'It took a lot of planning, but I definitely was not going to miss this,' Master Sergeant Jackson continued.  'I knew this was a very large milestone, more than what people think.... Just to fly for 36 hours, I'm a little bit jet lagged still... I wasn't going to miss this for the world.  'Heart pounding... probably one of the most proudest of my life.'  For Jackson, the momentous day left him at a loss for words.  'When I first saw him, I didn't recognize him... I saw the face and it was amazing,' the graduate told the outlet.  'I don't even know how to explain it.'
