Hardworking couple finally achieves the American dream and buys their first home...only for disaster to strike just 10 DAYS later

Pastry chef Olivia and musician John Chernyshev, both 31, had just become proud first-time home owners in the Murray Hill neighborhood in Jacksonville on July 1. But catastrophe hit on July 10, when a lightning strike sent a massive tree crashing through the roof just 10 days after they closed on the property, leaving their two cats trapped inside and causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage. At the time Olivia was driving a car full of belongings to the property when torrential rain and flash flooding alerts forced her to pull over. 'I pretty much watched the lightning bolt from like half a mile away from my new home,' she recalled. 'It gave me a weird feeling, so I drove over there.' From the street, everything looked normal, but once inside, Olivia heard the sound of dripping water. ‘I opened my husband’s studio door, and this branch had pierced through the ceiling, through the roof and spilled insulation everywhere,’ she said. A huge section of tree had crashed through the roof, dumping what Olivia described as a four-foot pile of insulation across the room. Olivia and John Chernyshev's dream home became a nightmare after they arrived at the house on July 10, to find a large tree had plowed through the back of the home just days after they had bought the home After spending nearly two years house hunting, looking at around 40 properties and working grueling 60- to 80-hour weeks to save for a down payment, the 31-year-olds thought they had finally achieved the milestone they had sacrificed so much for. Just days after closing on July , the couple had moved in their bed, set up John's recording studio and brought their two cats to the home The debris consumed the studio, landed from an opening directly above John’s chair. ‘He could have been sitting in there if he had been working. It was a miracle that he wasn’t there.’ John had planned to be home hours earlier but had been delayed at work in St Augustine. The lightning struck shortly after 7 pm as he was finally leaving, a delay Olivia now believes may have saved his life. Her first concern was for their two cats, who had been left inside during the storm. ‘I was so worried about them,’ she said. ‘But they were perfectly fine. My younger cat is normally so scared of storms, so it was really surprising.’ The strike left the 80-year-old home’s original hardwood floors warped by water, shattered a bedroom window and damaged walls, ceilings and baseboards throughout the house. In the immediate aftermath, it wasn’t emergency crews who came to help - it was a group of neighbors. Friends and nearby residents arrived with chainsaws and tarps to remove enough of the enormous tree to prevent further damage before restoration crews arrived the following day. The cats who were in the home at the time of the hit luckily emerged unscathed As first time homeowners, the pair have been thrown into the unfamiliar world of insurance claims and expensive deductibles  John's livelihood also took a major hit as more then 10,000 dollars worth of professional recording equipment was destroyed ‘It was really a community effort,’ Olivia said. Repair crews have told them walls may need to be torn out entirely. ‘It’s tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage,’ Olivia said. John also lost more than $10,000 worth of professional recording equipment essential to his work. Olivia managed to rescue his laptop and bass guitar from the damaged studio, although she says she breathed in fiberglass insulation while trying to save them. ‘I definitely breathed in a lot of fiberglass,’ she said. ‘But I was able to save the things he truly needed.’  For the Chernyshevs the situation remains incomprehensible. The newlyweds had spent almost two years searching for their first home, touring around 40 properties before finally finding the one they wanted. To afford it, they worked grueling shifts between 60 and 80 hours a week, skipped vacations and cut back on virtually every luxury. ‘We haven’t gone on vacation since our honeymoon three years ago,’ Olivia revealed. ‘We don’t splurge on anything. We’re just so focused on our budget and trying to get to the next step in our lives.’ ‘I feel like this was just such a huge hold-up for us.’ As first-time homeowners, the couple say the biggest challenge has been navigating the insurance process while trying to keep their lives on track. ‘We’re immediately having to figure out how to afford our deductible and figure out how home insurance works,’ Olivia said. ‘We have no idea what we’re doing.’ For a week, industrial fans blasted through the house in temperatures topping 100F to dry out the property. The couple are still unable to move in while they wait for insurance approval before permanent repairs can begin, a process they fear could take months. ‘The hardest part about all this is the waiting,’ Olivia said. ‘We don’t know what costs we’re going to have. We don’t know if we should move more stuff over there or move things back.’ Already stretched financially after buying their first home, Olivia says the only option is to keep working. ‘Now I just have to keep working more hours and try to find ways to make more money to make ends meet.’ Despite the destruction, Olivia is focusing on what matters most. ‘I’m more gratitude than grief right now because everyone is safe and alive,’ she said. ‘I could only imagine any other millennial going through something like this. It’s so freaking stressful, and you kind of don’t know what to do.’
