Sassuolo coach Fabio Grosso, a 2006 Italy World Cup winner, is ‘happy’ for his player Tarik Muharemovic, but, obviously, sad for the Azzurri: ‘We need the right people with clear ideas. It’s a long road…’

Italy World Cup winner Grosso, who scored the decisive penalty kick in the 2006 Final against France, spoke about the recent Azzurri defeat in the World Cup play-off Final.

“I felt the same as other Italians: we all wanted to be at the World Cup, which we’ve been missing for a long time, but unfortunately, we didn’t make it,” Grosso said on the eve of a Serie A match against Cagliari, via TMW.

“The question I’ve asked myself is: what would have happened if Pio or Kean had scored [the second goal]? It might sound like a simple question, but behind it are many things to say and explain.

“Obviously, I have a different role, and I’m so focused on what I’m doing, but we must be able to analyse what happens beyond incidents; otherwise, it will be about finding the guilty one every time.

“On the other hand, we must all contribute to a movement that we must try to revive. We need the right people with clear ideas. It’s a long road, but they need to know which road they want to take to restart.”

Sassuolo star Muharemovic was part of the Bosnia and Herzegovina team that beat Italy on penalties on Tuesday.

“Tarik is back, but I haven’t seen him yet,” Grosso said.

“I’ll do it today, with melancholy, because we are happy for him, but obviously sad for us. I also want to congratulate Idzes, who has been voted as the best player of the year in Indonesia.”

The FIGC announced on Friday that Gennaro Gattuso had terminated his contract by mutual agreement following Tuesday’s defeat in Bosnia.
