By SARAH BROOKES - SENIOR REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 06:25, 29 June 2026 | Updated: 06:25, 29 June 2026 A Queensland man accused of torturing and murdering a four-month-old baby boy allegedly shook the infant before his death, police claim. Alexander James Young, 22, from Kalkie, was charged at the weekend more than two years after the child died, following a ‘meticulous and challenging’ investigation, said police. The infant was taken to Bundaberg Hospital at 5.18pm on February 24, 2024, and airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital days later, where staff alerted authorities about his injuries. Footage showed officers descending on a Bundaberg West home to arrest Young, who was barefoot and dressed in a plaid shirt as he was led to a waiting police van. On Monday, Detective Inspector Wade Lee said police will rely on medical evidence to allege the child suffered injuries consistent with what’s known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. ‘It will be alleged the injuries are consistent with a child shake injury,’ he said. He confirmed the accused and child were known to each other, and said it was a domestic violence allegation, without giving further detail. Young was due to face Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday, where bail was expected to be opposed.
