A wedding night ensemble worn by actress Caitriona Balfe from the wedding of Jamie and Claire made over three times the expected price at £11,520. Other highlights included an iconic ‘dragonfly in amber’, which made £7,040 and an oil painting of Jamie’s ancestral home ‘Lallybroch Castle’, the real-life Midhope Castle near Edinburgh, which was sold for £5,376. A total of 385 lots went under the hammer in dedicated online and live sales dubbed ‘Outlander: The Auction’, with selected highlights going on display in advance in Edinburgh and London. First airing in the UK in 2015, the story follows former the Second World War nurse Claire Randall who travels through a mysterious stone circle to 18th-century Scotland, where she falls in love with Highland warrior Jamie. Over eight series, it captivated audiences worldwide, with Claire and Jamie’s story transporting devoted fans from the Highlands in the lead up to the Battle of Culloden to the streets of Paris, and later to the Caribbean and colonial North Carolina. Such is its popularity, the so-called ‘Outlander Effect’ has seen an unprecedented surge of tourism in Scotland, with fans flocking to filming locations as well as real historical sites connected with the story, including the Culloden battlefield. Lots in the sale spanned all eight seasons, 12 years of filming, and thousands of hours of craftsmanship by costume designers, prop makers and artisans. The most expensive comprised Claire’s three wedding rings, which were sold for £28,160, while a toile of the red ball gown worn by Claire in Season 2, Episode 2 ‘Not in Scotland Anymore’ was second highest at £12,160 – selling for over twice its £3,000-5,000 estimate. The White Dress created for Claire when she goes through the stones in season one and various episodes was bought by a fan for £7,040, while a tartan corseted dress as worn by Claire in season 1 episode ‘Lallybroch’ fetched £10,880. The show stars Scots actor Sam Heughan and Irish actress Caitriona Balfe Meanwhile, ‘Black Jack’ Randall’s red coat uniform, worn by actor Tobias Menzies in scenes of hand-to-hand conflict with Jamie, made £2,650. A model of the fictional Craigh na Dun standing stone circle created by the Outlander Art Department for the first ever series, inspired by the Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis, and featuring a miniature Claire, made £2,560. Outlander writer Matthew B Roberts, executive producer for all eight seasons, said: ‘The costumes, the props, the sets. Every piece was researched and constructed with an authenticity that could withstand the closest scrutiny. ‘That these pieces will now find their way to the fans who loved this show with such passion fills me with happiness.  'These objects were made with love, by people who gave everything to this story.  'They deserve to be treasured and I have no doubt they will be.’
