Gianni Infantino summoned to hand over documents and explain Donald Trump relationship

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has been summoned before the United States Congress following the launch of a formal investigation into the governing body's relationship with President Donald Trump and his administration.

Jamie Raskin, the most senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, dispatched a letter to Infantino demanding a comprehensive tranche of documents and communications. These must detail any gifts, payments or benefits directed towards Trump and his associates.

The Maryland congressman has also requested visitor logs from FIFA's office situated within Trump Tower, alongside a transcribed interview with Infantino himself.

A deadline of 9 August has been imposed for the submission of all requested materials and the scheduling of Infantino's appearance. The investigation follows months of intensifying scrutiny over the entanglement between football's supreme governing body and the White House, which reached fever pitch during this summer's World Cup.

The ties between Infantino and Trump had attracted considerable attention well before the tournament kicked off on North American soil. FIFA acquired premises in Trump Tower in Manhattan last July, a decision that raised eyebrows across the footballing world.

Months later, at the World Cup draw ceremony held in Washington's Kennedy Centre in December, the American president was presented with the newly minted "FIFA Peace Prize." The inaugural award drew widespread derision from observers and commentators alike.

These two moves — establishing a physical presence in the president's own commercial property and bestowing upon him a bespoke honour — set the stage for what would become a far more explosive controversy once the competition itself got under way.

By the time the first whistle blew, questions about the proximity between world football's governing body and the Trump administration were already impossible to ignore.

The most incendiary episode, however, centred on United States striker Folarin Balogun. During the round of 32, Balogun received a red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina, which ought to have ruled him out of the last-16 encounter with Belgium.

In an extraordinary turn of events, FIFA announced that the suspension had been deferred for twelve months, permitting the forward to feature against the Belgians. The decision was without precedent and provoked fury from rival national associations worldwide.

It subsequently emerged that Trump had personally telephoned Infantino to discuss Balogun's ban prior to its reversal. The president later took to social media to express his gratitude to FIFA for overturning what he characterised as "a great injustice."

The intervention cast a deep shadow over the American side's continued participation in the tournament and crystallised concerns about political interference in the sport's governance.

Raskin's letter amounted to a searing indictment of Infantino's stewardship of world football. "Your election as FIFA president was supposed to mark a red-card break from a decades-long culture of corruption and scandals that dressed down world soccer's reputation," the congressman wrote. "Instead, at the start of your tenure, you dismantled FIFA's ethical guardrails and disabled the organisation's ethics committee by pushing out most of its members."

He went further, accusing Infantino of currying favour with the administration through methods that a New York University law professor and former FIFA ethics committee member had characterised as "legal bribery."

Yet there remains a significant procedural obstacle to the inquiry's progress. As the Democrats do not hold a majority in the House, Raskin lacks the power to compel Infantino's attendance. Without Republican backing, the summons carries no enforceable weight.

Infantino himself had already gone on the offensive before Raskin's letter landed.

In a lengthy statement, the FIFA president lashed out at his detractors, accusing them of allowing hostility to blind them to the tournament's achievements.

"To all of you who missed watching kids, babies, grandparents and parents come together for the beautiful game, I say sorry that the matches are now over and sorry that you missed all that joy and togetherness," he wrote.

"Sorry that you were so consumed by hate and criticism that you missed it all."

He reserved particular scorn for the media. "To those behind their pens and papers, behind their screens spreading hate and false rumours, I want to say that while you are sitting behind, we at FIFA are on the front lines organising, working hard, and delivering the best show in the world," he continued. "While you divide, we unite."
