Ghana to Host CAF U-20 AFCON 2027 During 70th Independence Year
Rabat—The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially awarded Ghana the hosting rights of the CAF U-20 AFCON 2027, offering the West African country a great platform to celebrate 70 years of independence in 2027.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku confirmed the news yesterday, signalling the return of a major continental youth tournament to Ghanaian soil for the first time since 1999.
The competition is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, with CAF expected to confirm the exact dates, host cities and stadiums at a later stage.
Ghana’s appointment is a symbolic choice, making the tournament a key part of how the whole country celebrates Ghana’s independence anniversary.
CAF pointed out both the sporting and organizational significance of the choice. Ghana’s recent success in hosting events, including the African Games 2023 (held in 2024) and CAF school football competitions.
For Ghana, the U-20 AFCON will be an opportunity to showcase infrastructure and organizational capacity on a continental stage.
The stakes will be high in 2027, with the top four teams from the tournament qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, making it one of the most important youth competitions in world football.

An illustrious footballing legacy
Ghana’s appointment is also a nod to its strong legacy in youth football. The Black Satellites have won the CAF U-20 AFCON four times (1993, 1999, 2009, 2021), making them one of the most successful nations in the history of the competition.
The country also holds a unique place in African football history as the first African nation to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup, achieving the feat in 2009, before Morocco won its most recent edition in October 2025.
That, plus recent investments in sporting infrastructure, played a big role in CAF’s decision to bring the tournament back to Ghana.
The official kick-off window is now just under a year away. A local organizing committee is expected to be formed in the coming months to coordinate logistics, stadium readiness, security and fan engagement.
Details such as venues and match schedules are still to be confirmed, but expectations are that Ghana will be a celebration of Ghana’s football identity and national pride.
