GB News Daily Reflection — Monday 3rd August 2026

In today's GB News Daily Reflection, we consider how the feeding of the 5,000 and the 12 baskets of leftovers were a deliberate symbol of God’s abundant provision and the 12 tribes of Israel.

In this, Jesus Christ is presented as creating a renewed people of God and offering grace that is more than sufficient for all.

“When Matthew tells the story of when Jesus fed 5000 people, starting with just five loaves and two fish, he records that exactly 12 baskets of food were left over afterwards.

“That number seems significant. Why 12? To a Jewish audience, 12 was the number of the tribes of Israel. That was the full compass of God's people. And here we have 12 disciples collecting up these leftover baskets.

“The symbolism is telling a story because the account is so simple. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up 12 baskets full of broken pieces that were left over.

“They all ate, and there was more left over, more than they started with. Christians believe this is a window, a self-portrait of how God gives and how God will save.

“He's not stingy. It's barely sufficient, but it's overflowing beyond all accounting. And so the miracle doesn't just feed a crowd. It tells us who this one is and what he is doing through what he's feeding.

“It's creating a whole new people, calling these new disciples to be the means by which he would call more people with more than enough for each of them to have. That's why they were 12.”
