The Christian message of God’s patience and forgiveness through Jesus Christ has the power to cultivate greater humility, grace and self-control.
"We live in an age of instant reactions, whether on social media, in the news or in everyday life. We're often encouraged to make up our minds quickly, to jump to conclusions, to express our opinions loudly and assume the worst of those who disagree with us. We hear half a story, a former judgment, and feel ready to pronounce a verdict.
"The Bible offers wisdom that is almost the exact opposite of that. In James chapter one, we read, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.
"That's how we want people to behave towards us, isn't it? When I have a bad day, I want people to give me the benefit of the doubt. When I fail, I want to be forgiven.
"But we can be much less willing to extend the same grace to others. James goes on to say that the solution to this isn't to just try harder to be better, but rather to humbly accept the word planted in ye. That's what he says. He's referring there to a message which, like a seed buried in the soil, gradually grows and begins to bear good fruit.
"The message he's referring to is the Christian message of what God has done to save us. t's that message that has the power to change us. Christianity says that God's patience towards us isn't hypothetical. It's historical.
"It's seen in Jesus Christ, who came not to condemn us, but to forgive us in a world that rewards the quickest reaction, the sharpest put-down.
"Perhaps we need a message with the power to make us quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry."
