Drought to flood
I get the feeling that after years of silence we’re going to be getting a lot of The Witcher news and games over the next few years, with the new DLC going straight into The Witcher 4, which is the start of a new trilogy. And then on top of that you’ve got the multiplayer spin-off and the remake of the first game, if they’re still doing those – the development on them seems a bit troubled.

You can have too much of a good thing, so I hope they know what they’re doing, but in theory I’m all for it, because I love The Witcher 3. But they’re making a new Cyberpunk 2077 at the same time as well, so while I believe they’re a big company nowadays that is a lot of games to have on the boil at once.

Weirdly, I’m most looking forward to the DLC though. For some reason I really like the idea of making new DLC for a game that’s 10 years old, as a way to transition into the new sequel. It’s such a neat idea, I don’t know why nobody else has thought of it before. If the quality is up to the previous ones (both of which were top notch) then it could be game of the year material for me.

Familiar themes
Good on Hideo Kojima for not wanting to retire, he’s looked vaguely in his late 50s for decades now and always seems enthusiastic. What I don’t get though, is why he’s always talking about having loads of things he wants to do and not enough time, but he just keeps remaking the same games again and again.

His next two are not-Metal Gear and not-Silent Hill and when he did make something original, with Death Stranding, he immediately followed that up with a sequel. For a man with such a long and famous history in the games industry he’s got very little variety in what he’s done, and I think that’s a real shame.

I’d say it’s something he’ll come to regret when he actually does retire but I’ve never heard him speak about this or wish that he’d try more different things. If he’s happy I suppose that’s more than most of us can say with our careers but to me it seems like a bit of a waste.

Second remake
I’ve been thinking about the impending release of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. This compilation will be a great chance for anyone who never owned a PlayStation 3 to finally play Metal Gear Solid 4. I haven’t played Peace Walker, so I might consider buying this collection. Of the Metal Gears that I have played, Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation remains my favourite entry in the series. Instances of gameplay genius aside, the following games got a bit excessive for me, with regards to impenetrable plots and cut scenes.

OK, we got The Twin Snakes on the GameCube but if ever there was a game that merited a graphical overall it’s Solid Snake’s PlayStation debut.

Hit ‘em where it hurts
I don’t think the weeklong blackout of PlayStation 5 will work but I’m still taking part in it. The only thing that will change Sony’s mind is if the PlayStation 6 comes out and sales aren’t good and believe me, Sony could sell them with a £1,000 gold bar and I’ll still turn it down.

I’m not against digital games, I’m against them telling me it’s this way only. Sony only understands money, if their money drops they will start making changes and as for them trying to mock us, let’s see if they’re doing that and PlayStation 6 sales are lower than they thought they would be. Because if they are people will be mocking them.

Sony has to realise, you rub customers up the wrong way, they will just find other ways to play games, whether that’s PC or the Xbox, but they will leave them and they might not be able to win them back.

No laughing matter
I do keep having a little chuckle to myself with everyone talking about the Sony blackout like it’s some noble cause that is going to make a difference.

It would be like me saying I’m not going to drive my car, which I’ve already bought, to send a message to the dealership.

The only way to truly send a message is to not buy games or their next console, but to be honest the numbers are so small, I doubt they’d care.

Free reign
I got that email from Sony on Saturday today. The very best thing you could say about Sony is that they’re incredibly dumb and didn’t realise how it would look sending that out just as the boycott starts. More likely though they did it on purpose as a corporate ‘joke’ and are currently laughing their heads off in a boardroom somewhere.

Either way it gives us a real clear idea of how they think of us fans and how seriously they take our concerns. Digital-only is inevitable, I think anyone would admit that, but the way Sony has handled the annoucement has been incredibly bad. They could not have done this worse if they tried, and it really does seem like they did try.

With Xbox a lame duck I get that they have no real competition anymore, but do they have to make it so obvious that they’re just going to take us all for a ride, now that they don’t have to worry about us going anywhere else.

Obviously, the boycott was never going to work. As GC has said, most people are fine with digital downloads, what’s got them upset is the way this has been announced and the way Sony has handled it all.

The sad thing is, I suspect Sony is going to find new ways to mess with fans now they know they can get away with anything. The worst could be yet to come.

Hot Coffee Part 2
Why am I not shocked to find that ‘nudist town’ is the clip that GTA fans chose to be leaked next. Rockstar must be climbing up the wall right now, because it’s very obvious this guy has a copy of the game, or at least an early prototype.

GTA has had full frontal nudity since GTA 4, so in a way that’s nothing new, but the nudist party is going a step further. It makes me wonder if they’ll have a sex minigame in it again, as a reference to the Hot Coffee mod from San Andreas. I’m not sure they’d really risk the heat on that from US pearl clutchers but I bet they’ve thought about it.

Solem pledge
So I have decided that I’m going to go into GTA 6 and the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake as blind as possible, save for any news headlines I will inevitably see and maybe a quick scan of review scores, if those even appear before release in GTA’s case.

I don’t know how this declaration is interesting to anyone, and it is more just a case that if I put the information on paper I’m more likely to stick to it.

Although I would be interested if any other readers have done the same thing and how they went about it, as I did a similar thing with movies about 20 years ago and have never looked back.

The marketing cycle for both movies and games is just so aggressive that those in charge of said marketing will gladly ruin any big revelations in the hopes of better sales.

Imagine if the hat possession mechanic in Super Mario Odyssey was kept under wraps until release? It would’ve blown our socks off.

I really should go on a blackout for all games once I’ve decided I want to play them, but it’s just so tempting to fire up a new video or read a preview on GC in anticipation of a game I’m really excited for.

If I’m successful I will report back, probably in the new year, with my experience for both, but my hope is that it makes for a better experience, as it does for films.

I played The Duskbloods network test and to be honest I found it all a bit overwhelming. I’ve played From games before but not Nightreign, and I’m not sure I want to play a multiplayer game that is this complicated and has this many rules.

I wonder if Xbox is purposefully trying to normalise ultra expensive consoles with that 25th anniversary one. It seems a ridiculous price now, but it may still be cheaper than Project Helix and PlayStation 6.
