Free bus travel launches for millions across England this summer

Millions of children across England can now travel on local buses free of charge after the Government’s summer travel scheme launched on August 1.

The initiative allows eligible children aged five to 15 to use most local bus services across England without paying a fare until August 31.

Around 14 million children are expected to benefit during the school summer holidays.

The offer began over the weekend as families started taking advantage of the scheme, which forms part of the Government’s wider effort to reduce household costs over the summer break.

Britain’s five largest bus operators — Stagecoach, First Bus, Arriva, Go‑Ahead and National Express — have signed up, providing coverage across the vast majority of local routes.

Families are being advised to check local conditions before travelling, as some councils and operators have introduced additional eligibility requirements.

These may include proof of age, carrying a local travel pass, or travelling with an accompanying adult.

Rules vary by operator and local authority, so parents are encouraged to check with their local bus provider before boarding.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the initiative earlier this year as part of the Government’s Great British Summer Savings package, designed to help families manage higher spending during the school holidays.

Alongside free bus travel, the package includes VAT reductions on a range of family activities, discounted children’s meals at participating restaurants, reduced‑price cinema and theatre tickets, and lower‑cost admission at selected theme parks and adventure centres.

The free travel scheme applies to children aged five to 15 because under‑fives already travel free on local buses.

Typical child fares range between £1 and £2 per journey, meaning families who rely on buses throughout August could make significant savings.

The offer ends on August 31, after which normal fares and local concessionary arrangements will resume.

Families are also being encouraged to check new railcard rules, after the DfT confirmed half‑price train travel will be extended to 18‑year‑olds later this month.

The change means thousands of teenagers will now be able to save on rail fares alongside the Government’s wider summer travel discounts.

It follows the announcement that the cap on most single bus fares in England will fall from £3 to £2 next year.
