Victor Udoh, the Nigerian winger who spent time at Southampton's academy last year, has died at the age of 21 under suspicious circumstances in his home country.

The young footballer was discovered dead in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, where he had travelled for a holiday following the conclusion of the Czech football season.

Reports emerged on Tuesday regarding his unexpected passing, though the precise cause of death remains unclear.

Udoh had been visiting his local community after completing his first campaign with Czech second-tier club Dynamo Ceske Budejovice, where he moved following his departure from the Saints.

Udoh began his professional journey at Royal Antwerp after relocating from Nigeria to Belgium as an 18-year-old in 2023.

The forward made an immediate impact with the Young Reds, finding the net twelve times across 21 matches during his debut campaign with the Belgian club's youth setup.

His performances caught the attention of first-team manager Mark van Bommel, who elevated the talented winger to the senior squad.

During his time at the Bosuil, Udoh accumulated 28 official appearances for the Great Old, registering two assists before earning his move to English football.

He also made his professional debut in a home fixture against Charleroi during that breakthrough season.

Southampton secured his signature in February 2025, bringing the promising attacker to St Mary's on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Victor Udoh left Southampton last September before signing for Czech side Dynamo Ceske Budejovice

The Nigerian spent his time exclusively with the under-21 squad, featuring seven times in Premier League 2 and netting twice during his six-month stint on the south coast.

His spell with the Saints came to an end in September when both parties agreed to terminate his deal, with Udoh seeking greater playing opportunities at senior level.

The following month, he signed a three-year agreement with Dynamo Ceske Budejovice in the Czech National Football League, hoping to establish himself in first-team football.

Royal Antwerp expressed their profound sorrow upon learning of their former player's passing.

"With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh," the Belgian club stated. "Our thoughts are with Victor's family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time. Rest in peace, Victor."

While some reports suggest suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, other sources have indicated possible food poisoning as a potential factor.

Nigerian authorities and the country's football federation have yet to issue any official statement regarding the exact circumstances of Udoh's death.
