Speaking to GB News, the former Navy officer said the motivation behind the descsion in the long-awaited Defence Investment plan presented a “significant problem”.
“There is no doubt that the Royal Navy, and indeed all our services, need to move in that direction,” Mr Gater began.
“However, that isn't the reason I think this is being chosen. The reason this is being chosen is that it is cost-effective within the budget that is available, and that is a significant problem.
“This nation's greatness has derived almost exclusively from the power of the Royal Navy throughout its modern history,” the defence expert explained.
He added that “something along the lines of 95 per cent of everything that (Britons) consume, whether that be energy or commodities, arrives... by sea.”
