Published: 09:04, 1 July 2026 | Updated: 09:04, 1 July 2026 Forest Green Rovers have scrapped their women's team to 'concentrate resources' on the men. The Gloucestershire club, who are owned by eco tycoon Dale Vince and managed by Robbie Savage, are in the National League and striving to reach League Two again. Vince is worth around £100million and became a major shareholder in Forest Green Rovers in 2010 having made his money in renewable energy. His practices at the club have made waves over the last 16 years, including banning red meat products from being sold at the ground and playing in the world's 'wokeist' kit made out of recycled plastic and coffee grounds. But the dissolution of the women's side is hardly a progressive move for the club, who announced their intentions on Tuesday. A statement read: 'Forest Green Rovers will not have a women’s team for the 2026-27 season” a club spokesman said: “We had been in discussions with Hartpury University about a partnership, but the uni made a decision that ruled out the possibility of a joint [women’s] team. Forest Green Rovers' owner Dale Vince has decided to scrap the club's women's team 'This means we’ll also be stepping back from our joint involvement with Hartpury’s elite training centre for girls aged nine to 16. 'Our partnership with Hartpury has been worthwhile and valued, we’ll continue to support them as they explore ways to take the programme forward through Hartpury Women FC. 'Forest Green Rovers is committed to returning to the EFL as quickly as possible and that means concentrating our resources and efforts on strengthening the Club and achieving that goal. 'This isn’t goodbye to women’s football at Forest Green. We’d like to return to it in the future, when the time is right and when we can build a programme that is sustainable and successful for the long term. 'We’d like to thank the players, staff, volunteers and supporters who have been part of the women’s programme and wish them every success for the future.' The FA had already confirmed Forest Green Women’s allocation into tier five for next season but they will no longer play a part. Forest Green's men's side have been in the National League since relegation in 2024. Savage guided them to the playoffs last season after finishing in seventh place but their promotion dream was dashed by defeat against Boreham Wood.
