Food sector booms amid economic slowdown

Despite an overall slowdown in business activity across the country, the food sector in Faisalabad is witnessing robust growth, with nearly 25,000 registered food outlets across the district, reflecting rising consumer demand and an expanding urban economy. Official data reveals that 24,933 active Food Business Operators (FBOs) have been registered since January 2024, indicating a significant increase in commercial activity in both urban and peri-urban areas. Faisalabad Commissioner and Administrator Metropolitan Corporation Raja Jahangir Anwar described the trend as a sign of economic momentum and growing business confidence. "Faisalabad is emerging as a vibrant economic hub where micro, small and medium enterprises are expanding and creating large-scale employment opportunities," he said. "This sector alone is supporting thousands of workers, including shopkeepers, vendors, suppliers and logistics staff." Data shows that karyana (grocery) stores dominate the sector, with 7,853 outlets, followed by more than 3,000 food points. The sector spans 84 business categories, ranging from tea stalls and small eateries to restaurants, bakeries, departmental stores and large-scale manufacturers. Small and medium enterprises account for nearly 79% of all registered outlets, underlining their central role in the local economy. "These small businesses are the backbone of our economy. They generate livelihoods and ensure the continuous circulation of money within local markets," the commissioner added. Officials believe the expansion of the food sector over the past two years has contributed to employment generation at the grassroots level, improved market liquidity and strengthened supply chains across the district. "With nearly 25,000 operational units, this sector is injecting substantial economic value into the market every day," Anwar noted. Business operators have acknowledged the role of regulatory bodies, particularly the Punjab Food Authority (PFA), in facilitating compliance. Rubab, manager of a KFC outlet on Canal Road, said online services have made it easier to obtain licenses and medical certificates for staff.
