First Lebanon–Israel Direct Talks in 43 Years Open in Washington
المصدر: البوابة | Source: البوابةALBAWABA- Lebanese and Israeli delegations met in Washington on Monday for the first direct preparatory talks between the two sides since 1983, in a US-hosted effort to explore the possibility of a ceasefire and a broader de-escalation of hostilities.
The meeting brings together Lebanon’s Ambassador to Washington, Nada Hamadeh, Israeli Ambassador Yehiel Litter, US Ambassador to Beirut, Michel Issa, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Officials described the session as an initial, low-level step aimed at building confidence and setting the agenda for any future negotiations.
The talks come amid a sharp escalation in southern Lebanon, where Israeli military operations have continued despite what regional observers describe as a fragile truce framework linked to broader US-Iran diplomatic efforts earlier this month. Lebanese officials say the ongoing strikes undermine the conditions necessary for meaningful progress in Washington.
Tensions have also been heightened by repeated Israeli statements outlining far-reaching security objectives. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has floated the idea of a 10-kilometre buffer zone inside Lebanese territory.
Defence Minister Israel Katz has warned that a significant portion of displaced Lebanese civilians may not be allowed to return home unless Israel’s northern security concerns are fully addressed. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has gone further, publicly suggesting territorial expansion up to the Litani River.
On the ground, footage from the border town of Al-Khyyam shows extensive destruction of homes, farmland, and civilian infrastructure, with ongoing exchanges of fire reported between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the southern frontier.
Lebanese authorities have condemned the continued military activity as a violation of the ceasefire framework and a potential threat to the Washington process itself.
While the meeting marks a historic resumption of direct contact after more than four decades, escalating violence on the ground could limit its effectiveness.
