Basel released a statement confirming a fire had taken place in the first-team locker room of the club’s home ground, St. Jakob-Park, on Friday evening. The club said no one was injured but the source of the fire remains “unclear”. The fire “completely destroyed” the changing area of the locker room, while there was also “extensive property damage”, including to players’ football boots, jerseys and medical equipment. A Basel statement read: “Due to the damage incurred and the lack of usable match and medical equipment, FC Basel is unable to play the away match against FC Thun on Saturday, April 11, 2026.” The Swiss Football League confirmed it had approved Basel’s request to postpone the match, which was due to be played at the Stockhorn Arena at 8:30pm local time. Basel said it was in touch with relevant authorities regarding the incident and the area has been sealed off. The Athletic has contacted local police for comment. The club added large amounts of smoke were caused by the fire, and the coaches’ office, the team manager’s office, the physiotherapy areas, the showers and toilets all sustained damage. All parties said details over the fixture’s rescheduling would be confirmed in due course. Basel are Swiss football’s second most successful club, having been crowned league champions on 21 occasions. Thun lead the Swiss Super League by 11 points, while Basel are fourth. Basel are due to return to action at St. Jakob-Park against Sion on April 26. Spot the pattern.
