Fifa to review 'disgusting' brawl at end of World Cup final

FIFA will review the "disgusting" brawl at the end of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

Violence broke out moments after the full-time whistle, with Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes appearing to throw punches at members of Spain's celebrating squad.

Paredes appeared to push Eric Garcia by the throat and hit out at Spain's Gavi, while Nahuel Molina threw hands at Rodri.

The match commissioner's report will be reviewed within FIFA, it is understood, before any decision is taken regarding disciplinary proceedings.

Argentina came under heavy criticism for their antics at the end of the game, with former England striker Alan Shearer labelling it as "disgusting".

During the match, Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second bookable offence on Pau Cubarsi.

The midfielder went flying into the Spanish defender, sending him hurling up in the air in a challenge that arguably could have been a straight red.

Despite the nature of the foul, Fernandez still complained and tried to get his former club teammate and friend Marc Cucurella sent off for appearing to cover a small part of his mouth while speaking to Lionel Messi.

Argentina's behaviour throughout the tournament has raised scrutiny, particularly in their semi-final against England.

After beating the Three Lions 2-1, Argentina's players paraded a banner proclaiming Argentinian sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

The act was allegedly in direct contravention of Article 34.3 of the tournament regulations.

FIFA has previously taken a hard line with political gestures, such as telling the English FA that Harry Kane would start with a yellow card if he wore a "OneLove" rainbow-themed armband at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where it is illegal to be homosexual.

The chaotic scenes after the game did not overshadow Spain's brilliant victory, as they won their second World Cup.

The European Champions, now the World Champions, were by far the better team, dominating proceedings throughout.

Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute of extra time to win football's greatest prize for his country.

Spain captain Rodri, who completed football after lifting the trophy, said he hopes the win will inspire others.

"We're a bit shocked right now, even myself. I cannot express with words. I think now we're like in a cloud but, for me, it's been a very tough time. I just want the new generations to see my example as an opportunity. When you go down, you can rise again. This is my philosophy for my entire life.

"Of course, sometimes things go well, things go wrong, but always the positiveness. I said to the lads before the game: 'We have to go for the game'. We need to face them, we have to look to their eyes. We want this game.

"And then life gives you the World Cup or not, but we were brave, and I was brave in that moment I was down, so I want to thank all the people that helped me.

"But I want to thank myself, to be honest, in those moments," he told Fox Sports.
