Fernando Mendoza says family, travel among reasons for not attending NFL Draft

Cox / Getty Images Share article2Projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza explained his decision not to attend the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh this week. “My mom really wanted to do it at home and so did (both) my parents,” Mendoza said during a Monday appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. “It’s a lot easier for us with the family situation.” Mendoza’s mother, Elsa, has multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system; she uses a wheelchair. Mendoza told Eisen that staying at his Miami home for the draft will ease logistics for the family as they support him through his draft-day moment. “We’re going to have to hop on a plane the next morning anyways,” Mendoza said. “And for that travel, it would be a lot easier to stay at home.” Mendoza said he views his mother’s resilience as inspiration. “I see her fighting every single day, and with a smile on her face,” Mendoza said. “So there’s no excuse for me to have a bad day, bad play or bad game. I’m always trying to have an optimistic approach, give the best and serve the best to my teammates.” If the Las Vegas Raiders, as expected, select the reigning Heisman Trophy winner with the top selection, he will be the first No. 1 pick not in attendance since Jacksonville Jaguars selected edge Travon Walker in 2022. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, taken first by the Jaguars in 2021, was also not in attendance. Mendoza joins a growing trend of top prospects declining the NFL’s invitation to attend the draft in favor of spending it somewhere else. Average attendance has dropped since the COVID-19 pandemic. Among reasons players have given for staying home: volatile draft projections, family attendance, marketing opportunities and travel. Mendoza also said sharing his moment with more than just his immediate family, which staying in Miami will allow him to do, was important to him. “I wanted to stay and make the memory with everybody who poured into my football journey,” Mendoza told Eisen. “Mentors, coaches, family, friends. Being able to share that memory with all of them is going to be the best memory that I can make, rather than limit it to 10 or 12 people in Pittsburgh.” The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, being held outside the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Acrisure Stadium, begins at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday.
